Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOAN MAY CASWILL May 25, 1924 May 2, 2011 After a short stay, Joan passed away peacefully in Concordia Hospital at the age of 86. She was predeceased by her dearly loved husband Bob in October, 2002, her parents Edith and Herbert Brister, and her brother Stan. She will be deeply missed by her children: Gail (Ron) Richert, Wendy (Karl) Jurkowski, and Bob (Pam) Caswill. Her memory will be cherished by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Jeff (Nadeen Halls) and Jon Richert; Steven (Susan) and their two children Wesley and Charlotte, Karen, and David (girlfriend Kimberly Beaudry) Jurkowski; Christopher (Jackie) Caswill and Melissa (Matt) Brett. She will be fondly remembered by family members in Great Britain, Australia, and Canada, as well as longtime friends and neighbours. As a young woman, Mum lived through the bombing of London. In 1945, she married Bob, who had served in the RCAF as part of Bomber Command in the Second World War. Mum came to Winnipeg in 1946 via Pier 21 in Halifax, where a special plaque commemorates her crossing as a British War Bride. Although she became a proud Canadian citizen in April, 1969, Mum never lost her British accent and maintained a deep affection for her homeland, where she often returned with her husband, visiting family and friends. She was a devoted wife and loving mother who valued family life and took pride in her home and flower garden. She displayed a keen interest in the world around her. As she got older, Mum faced a number of new challenges including widowhood and health issues, but did so without complaint or self-pity. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and home care workers who took such good care of Mum over the years, especially the kind and compassionate staff at Concordia Hospital for all of their support in the last two weeks of her life. Cremation has taken place. A funeral service and celebration of her life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg on Monday, May 9, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan Caswill's memory may be made to Concordia Hospital, the Winnipeg Humane Society, CancerCare Manitoba, or to a charity of your choice.
