ELINOR (JEAN) HARDY (nee GUPPY) May 4, 2011 Beautiful wife, mother, and grandmother Born in 1920 in Rosewood, Manitoba, Jean was the eldest child of Louise and Roy Guppy, and sister to Eden Barber of Vancouver, Margaret Peadson of Prairie Grove, Manitoba (deceased), and the late Jack Guppy (Airdrie) of Ottawa. Jean grew up on the prairies during the depression. Tragically, Jean was widowed during the Second World War. Graduating as an RN from St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, she worked as a nurse at the hospital until she met and married William (Bill) Hardy. Soon after, they moved to Nova Scotia where their first two children were born. They returned to Winnipeg six years later and had four more children. Bill's career led them to Ottawa where they raised their family. In Ottawa, Jean started a new career as a social worker, working at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute at the Ottawa Civic Hospital until she retired. Jean filled our lives with swimming lessons and summer camps, and late-night cottage dinners, and always had room at the table for our friends to join us. Jean is survived by her husband Bill, her daughter Eloise Hardy and husband Rob Lister of Oakville, her son Charles Hardy and wife Athanasia Strifas of Ottawa, and daughter Michele Hardy and husband David Moffat of Ottawa. Sadly Jean was predeceased by daughter Patricia in 1963, sons Christopher, 1984, and Robin, 1995. Gran will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren Meryl, Micaela, Madison, Jeremy, and Warren. Jean died peacefully, surrounded by family, at the Perley and Rideau Veterans Health Centre. The family wishes to thank the staff of Ottawa 2 West for their incredible dedication, and for the comfort they provided in the time Jean was a resident, and during her final days in palliative care. The family also wishes to thank Ashley Yusuf and Clarene Campbell for their warm and generous assistance in caring for Jean over the years. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor) Ottawa, on Sunday, May 8, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Memorial Service will be held at Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Ave., Monday, May 9 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Perley Rideau Foundation or the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Condolences/Donations/Tributes at: mcgarryfamily.ca 613-233-1143
