He passed peacefully on May 7, 2011 with his family by his side. His memory will be cherished by his wife Shirley, daughter Yee-Ling, son Yee-Ming, daughter-in-law Julie, brothers Shen Kwok and Sheng Soon, in-laws Margaret and Derek, and his numerous nieces and nephews. Born in Malaysia, Philip moved to study on scholarship to Taiwan where he met his life partner, Shirley. Continuing with his graduate studies at the University of Manitoba, he then settled in Winnipeg to work at the Freshwater Institute as a research biologist while raising his family. An active member of the Chinese community, Philip pursued his passion of immigrant advocacy and optimizing multicultural-relations. He worked closely with his local, provincial and federal government offices. His work had been celebrated by numerous awards including the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Award. In his spare time, he immensely enjoyed traveling, playing golf, and savouring sumptuous cuisine.
