HAROLD HYMAN Harold was born June 5, 1918, and passed away at the Simkin Centre on April 30, 2011. He was predeceased by his parents Harry and Rose Hyman of Regina Saskatchewan; by brothers and sisters-in-law Leonard and Rowena; Norton and Noreen; and sister-in-law Essie. He is survived by his loving wife Etta of 64 years of marriage; brother Rabbi Saul Hyman; son Jack Hyman (Carol); daughter Debbie Silverman (Morley); grandchildren Erin, Matthew, and Blake (Michelle); and great-grandchildren Nathan and Maggie; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Harold (Major Hyman) was a conducting officer/war correspondent in the Second World War. He spent time in England and Scotland before the invasion and became part of the D-Day Dodgers. He landed with the troops on the beaches of Sicily and Italy and marched all the way to Rome. After the war Harold came back to Regina to marry his sweetheart Etta. He spent the next 45 years plus as a journalist with the Regina Leader Post, city editor with the Winnipeg Tribune, editor of the Western Jewish news, and the last 25 years before retirement at the Legislature building with the provincial government. At the Ledge he worked in the department of information services, editing and writing many of the speeches given and press releases and more. Remembered as a kind and compassionate man, who did not make acquaintances but who made lasting friendships; he volunteered many hours to the Canadian Cancer Society, Hadassah-Wizo, Jewish National Fund and many more organizations. He was always available to lend his communication skills for the help of many charities. Harold enjoyed his retirement spending time with his wife Etta, children, and grandchildren who miss him greatly; he was a man who spoke few words, but with a flourish and tapping of keys could make a speech historic. The Typewriter kept tapping during his retirement and a pen and joke book were never far from his fingertips. Thank you to the nurses and care givers at Weinberg 3 at the Simkin Centre for their care and kindness to dad. A special thank you, from the family to Rabbi Green, for his support and guidance during this time of mourning. Funeral services were held May 3, 2011 at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. The pallbearers were Steven Hyman, Brian Hyman, Murray Hyman, Erin Hyman, Matthew Hyman and Gary Bernard. Honorary pallbearers were Val Werier, Fritzi Telpner, Barry Hyman, and Norm Donogh. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, the Jewish National Fund, or a charity of your choice.
