WILLIAM LYLE NELSON Peacefully on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 in the early morning hours, aged 73, at home, Bill continued on to his next journey. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of over 50 years Ellenore, son Jeffrey, daughter Karen (Kerry) Sagness; granddaughters Mikaela and Keanna Sagness; brother Ralph (Brenda) sister Cheryl (John) Gerrard, brother-in-law Bill (Linda) Allan, sister-in-law Irene (Mike) Joyal, cousins, nephews and nieces. Bill was predeceased by his mother Margaret, Aunt Julie Dobbs, Aunt Phyllis and Uncle Leonard Brentnall, Aunt Win and Uncle Bert Wallis, father-in-law Thomas Allan, mother-in-law Margaret Allan and John Bissell who was like the father he never had; grandparents Michael Caruso, William and Stella Nelson. Bill lived all his life in Winnipeg. He attended Somerset Elementary, Earl Grey Jr. High and Kelvin High School. After quitting school in grade ten he was fortunate to be hired as a bike delivery boy for Triangle/Automobile Supply on Fort Street. He was with the Schwartz and Arkin Families for over 20 years and was blessed to have the best boss a fatherless boy could have in Red Slocombe. After the company was sold, he found employment with various Auto Supply companies. Then came a turning point for Bill and as a Jack-of-all-trades he thought he would try a different line of work. He found employment as a maintenance man, working for various companies, the last one being Shelter Canadian Properties. He was very much appreciated there, not only by the various commercial renters whose sites he maintained but also by his employer. He thoroughly enjoyed his job because at the end of every day he knew he had helped someone. He retired as Maintenance Supervisor for the Commercial Division. Bill was involved with Minor Hockey in the West End and played in the Old Timer's Hockey League for Orioles Community Club. Retirement allowed Bill to spend more time with his special granddaughters who brought him so much joy. Because of his unconditional love, he will never be forgotten. The family extends sincere thanks to Dr. S. Silagy, Dr. N. Kepron, Dr. P. Kerr, Dr. D. Sutherland, Dr. T. Hayakawa, Dr. A. Maksymuik and their teams who looked after Bill above and beyond the call of duty. Also, to the Home Oxygen Program especially Home Care RN Rechell, the Palliative Care Program and the co-ordinator Allison that allowed Bill to remain at home to the end. Thank you to the firemen, EMS, Medi-Van and all of the various staff members in the Health Sciences Centre Emergency Dept., who treated Bill with dignity and respect, enabling him to return home for his final days as was his wish. A celebration of Bill's life will take place on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Voyage Funeral Chapel, 220 Hespeler @ Henderson Hwy. Cremation has taken place and a private interment will be held at a later date. For those that wish to honour Bill, donations may be sent in Bill's memory to either Cancer Care Foundation of Manitoba - Head Neck Research or The Volunteer Services of Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB. R3E 0V9 or a charity of your choice. The clock of life is wound but once, and no man has the power to tell just when the hands will stop at late or early hour. To lose one's wealth is sad indeed, to lose one's health is more. To lose one's soul is such a loss that no man can restore. The present only is our own, so live, love, toil with a will. Place no faith in tomorrow, for the clock may then be still. -Robert H. Smith.
