DOUGLAS NORTHCOTE READER After a long fight with cancer, Douglas Northcote Reader, aged 69, passed away at the Lakeshore General Hospital in Ashern, Manitoba, on Thursday, May 12, 2011. Born March 16, 1942, in The Pas, Manitoba, he lived in a number of places around Northern Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario before making a home for the last many years in Moosehorn, Manitoba. As a young man, he attended Prairie Bible Institute and was called from there to be a missionary. His life was dedicated to the sharing of his faith and the blessing of others through mission work as a director and speaker at children's camps, as a travelling preacher and missionary, and as a pastor. He is survived by Gena, his wife of almost 45 years; his six children, Darla (Ernest), Kevin (Laurette), Darren (Roxy), Daniel (Sheri), Gerald and Dayna and their families including nine grandchildren. Douglas was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend and servant. He lived to bring laughter and light to all he interacted with and was loved for the simplicity and goodness of his heart. He revelled in the glorious creation of his Maker and was most at home in the bush or on the water; he was a trapper, a fisherman, a hunter, and, in all, a lover of nature with a heart that abounded in joy and thanksgiving for the beauty and abundance of our world. Burial will be held in private. Relatives and friends are welcome at the service and reception following at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at the Moosehorn Community Hall on Railway Ave. in Moosehorn, MB with Pastor Mike Andrews officiating. Memorial contributions are welcome and can be sent to the organization of the giver's choice: Moosehorn Baptist Church, P.O. Box 63, Moosehorn, MB R0C 2E0, the Eagle Bay Camp Ministry Centre, P.O. Box 34, Hilbre, MB R0C 1L0 or to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., ON1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. Arrangements by: ARNASON FUNERAL HOME Ashern - Lundar 1-204-768-2072 1-866-323-3593

I didn’t know him very well, because he died when I was only four years old. But we have a really cute picture of us playing catch, and he has such a sweet look of joy on his face. And apparently after the funeral, I asked where he was, and Grandma said he was in heaven, and I said “oh, I thought he’d be back by now” I like to think he would have laughed his head off. I’m a hunter and a fisher too, and doing those activities always make me feel closer to him in a way. Also, I just realized he died on the exact same day my dog Skipper was born, year and all. I like to think while we were grieving a loss, God gave us a little fluffy gift on the same day. I’m not sure anyone will ever read this comment, but I love my Grandpa and can’t wait to get to know him better one day. - Posted by: Kate Reader (Granddaughter) on: Jan 07, 2023
