ANDREW STAUDZS It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Andrew Staudzs on May 14, 2011. Dad passed away with his wife Carolyn and his three children, Sandy, Karla and Paul by his side. Andy was predeceased by his mother Leokadija and father Antons. Andy leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife and children, his brother Victor (Elaine), his sonsin-law Ron and Stan and his precious grandchildren, Thomas, Stefan, Jenna and Katherine. Dad was born in Daugaupils, Latvia on May 31, 1943. During the Second World War his family fled Latvia and lived in a displaced persons camp in Memmingen, Germany until immigrating to Canada in the summer of 1949. He adjusted well to life in Canada and made lifelong friendships growing up on Langside Street in Winnipeg. Dad graduated from St. Paul's High School at the age of 15 and went on to complete his degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Manitoba. During this time Dad took a summer job at Underwood-Mclennan where he met the love of his life, Carolyn DeMeyer. After graduation, Andy went on to work for Templeton Engineering and Teshmont. In order to secure his families future, he then accepted a job at Manitoba Hydro where he worked for the next 29 years. Andy was well respected by all of those that he worked with and took great pride in his profession. Family was always Dad's number one priority. Our family enjoyed many great times together on various vacations throughout North America. Retirement gave Mom and Dad even more opportunity to explore the world. Together, they travelled extensively through the Caribbean and Europe, including a trip back to Latvia where Dad was able to re-discover his fascinating family heritage. Though not always the most outspoken in the group, Dad's ability to debate and engage in various conversations was immensely respected. Andy was very well read, constantly learning opposing perspectives on many different subjects. His extensive knowledge led to his tolerant attitude towards opposing views. Grandpa also took great pride in teaching little lessons to his grandchildren and they in turn looked up to him. We will miss his common sense and his ability to distinguish the difference between right and wrong. Dad, thank you for your guidance and the sacrifices you have made for us during your life. We will carry on your values and will treasure the wonderful memories of our time together. A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 19 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Parish, 510 River Avenue, with Fr. Sam Argenziano officiating. Interment will follow at Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery at 1 Green Acres Lane. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Andy's memory to St. Boniface Hospital or The Children's Hospital.
