Born: Jan 15, 1937
Date of Passing: May 14, 2011
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGILBERT (GIL) SAVOIE It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Gilbert (Gil) Arthur Savoie on Saturday, May 14, 2011, after a two-year battle with cancer. Gil was surrounded by love, and faced the end with his characteristic grace and dignity. Cherishing the many happy memories are his lifelong sweetheart and wife of 54 years, Pat (McGee); daughters Lise (Russ Douglas) and Nicole (Paul LaCoste); granddaughters Megan (boyfriend Mike), Amy and Angelique; sister Diane (George Derbyshire); as well as many nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins and special friends. Born January 15, 1937, Gil was raised in Transcona. Welcoming him to the card-games in heaven are his parents Oril and Eva Savoie, his brother Vic, in-laws Joseph and Sophie McGee, and other family and friends. An avid follower of news and politics, Gil built his career in the media, using his special gift for photography to start out in newspapers (Winnipeg Tribune and Brandon Sun). In 1960 he moved into TV news as a cinematographer with CJAY and then with CBC / Radio-Canada before retiring in 1997. After retirement Gil and Pat realized their dream of owning a winter home in Arizona, happy to renew old friendships and enjoy the sun in Mesa. Their daughters and families have spent many a fun-filled vacation with them, learning about golf, billiards, darts and the art of the driveway party'. There will be many a happy-hour with glasses raised in his honour. Gil has always been known for his quick sense of humour, his wonderfully warm heart, his graciousness and his love for family. He loved being surrounded by his girls', and delighted in everything we did. We have always felt his love and pride, and adored him in every possible way. Pat, Lise and Nicole would like to thank the doctors and staff at CancerCare Manitoba, Health Sciences Centre GA4, and St. Boniface Palliative for their care and compassion. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Flowers are gratefully declined; donations are welcomed for Salvation Army, CancerCare Manitoba or the charity of your choice. Rest now, Dad - enjoy a golf game, a big steak and a glass of wine. We miss you and we love you very much! For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.mb.ca 885-9715
