Date of Passing: May 25, 2011
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryIDA MACPHERSON (nee SIGURDSON) After a brief illness, with family by her side, Ida MacPherson passed away on May 25, 2011, at the age of 90. Ida will be missed and lovingly remembered by her children, Randall (Paula), Judith Clachrie (Rob) of Calgary, Elaine, and Ritchie (Janet) of Denver; her grandchildren, Michael, Alan and Lee; Colin and Allison; Alex and Charlie; her brother Hal Sigurdson, sister-in-law Sheila McPherson of Ottawa, and her extended family and friends both in Canada and Iceland. Ida was predeceased by Fred, her husband of 55 years, in 2005, and by her sister Connie, sisters-in-law Merelyn Sigurdson, Gertrude MacPherson, May McPherson, Charlotte McCarron, and Dorothy Richardson and brothers-in-law Edwin McCarron, James MacPherson and Leonard McPherson. Ida was born in Churchbridge, Saskatchewan, and moved to Winnipeg to attend high school where she resided from that time on. In 1949 Fred and Ida were married in Winnipeg, where Ida stayed at home to raise their four children. In addition, Ida kept busy with other activities including sewing, gardening, 5-pin ladies league bowling at Academy Uptown Lanes and 10-pin mixed bowling with Fred. Later, she took up oil painting with the Charleswood Art Group and worked part time at Eaton's downtown store. She was also an avid bridge player and an active member of Oxford United Church volunteering her time, as required. Ida was considered by many to be a gracious hostess and a great cook. Her baking was always in demand and enjoyed by family and friends alike. Ida was the consummate caregiver, stepping in to provide care and assistance to family and extended family members whenever the need arose through the years. This propensity also extended to the feline world, as she had a soft spot for any stray cat that made its way to her doorstep. Ida was proud of her Icelandic heritage and, with Fred, travelled to Iceland to tour and visit with her numerous relatives. Ida loved spending time at the family cottage in Gimli which was the scene of many happy occasions. In particular, the Islendingadagurinn long weekend in August was always the highlight of her summer at which time family and friends would gather. Ida's drole remarks and occasional zingers' kept people smiling. We will all remember, cherish and miss her unique wit and charming sense of humour right to the end. A memorial service for Ida will be held at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. on Wednesday, June 1 at 2:00 p.m., Reverend Clark Saunders officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ida's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and everlasting appreciation to all the staff of the Charleswood Care Centre, especially the Nurses and Health Care Aides of Wings 4 and 1 and the fabulous Recreation staff who always kept Ida entertained and involved. Ida's life at the Charleswood Care Centre was greatly enriched by the care, compassion, love and professionalism of every staff member.
