HELEN PORCO (nee MANZA) It is with great sadness that the family of Helen Porco, aged 88, announces her passing after a short battle with cancer on Monday, May 30, 2011, with her family by her side. Helen will be forever cherished and lovingly remembered by her children, Frank, Carol (Rolly), Ken (Allayne); her grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sister Eda Spuzak and many nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband Guido; her daughter Rosalyn; parents, Joseph and Maria Manza; brothers, Peter and Fred Manza; sister Jean Merkel; niece Marrietta Wolenter; brothers-in-law, Mike Porco, Wilf Merkel, Myron Spuzak, Peter Spazunolo; sisters-in-law, Rose Manza and Josie Todoruk. Mom was born November 15, 1922 in Transcona and spent the majority of her adult life there. As a young woman she worked at City Meat and Sausage on Main Street in Winnipeg, where she spent eight years. Shortly after that she met Dad and began raising their family. Mom and Dad were married for 54 years. They loved to camp and travel to many destinations with friends and family. After Dad retired they spent their winters in Mesa for 11 memorable years. Mom was happiest when she was with her family and friends. She had a wonderful quality of making people around her feel good and never had a negative thing to say about anyone. She was a people person, loved by everyone who knew her. Mom also got great comfort and enjoyment from attending church services at St. Joseph's and participating in many parish functions. In later years she lived at Irene Baron Eden Center and subsequently River East Personal Care Home, where she resided until her passing. The family would like to sincerely thank the staffs at both River East Personal Care Home and the 3rd floor west at Concordia Hospital for their care and compassion. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m., St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, 505 Brewster St., with Father Sam Argenziano presiding. Interment will follow at the Transcona Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in the memory of Mom may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
