JAMES DUNCAN (JIM) BRISCO 1918 - 2011 Jim was born on September 10, 1918 at Charlton, ON. The son of Lila and Gary Briscoe, he grew up with siblings, Dent, Woody, Winnie and Beryl. The family ran a hardware business in Charlton. Jim had fond memories of his youth and the many family dogs. Jim served overseas in the Second World War. On his return he continued in hardware, then took up prospecting and eventually became an underground miner in Kirkland Lake. Jim moved to Atikokan, ON in 1952 and worked at Steep Rock Iron Mines for over 25 years. He progressed from labourer to management but always said he was a hard-rock miner . In Atikokan he built his life, his home and raised his children. He was an avid gardener, bird watcher, sports lover and member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. Following the passing of his first wife, Mary, in 1970 Jim was blessed to have married Donna whom he loved and cherished for 39 years. After retiring from Steep Rock, Jim and Donna spent winters in Harlingen, Texas for 13 great years. He developed his golf and bridge games and had a large circle of close friends. Jim loved visits from his children and grandchildren and took them on short jaunts to Mexico for nachos. After retirement, Jim was able to devote more time to his beloved Boston Red Sox and took his family on trips to watch games across North America. Jim and Donna made Winnipeg their home in 1994 and have lived at Portsmouth Retirement Home since 2004. He always had a plan, often involved food and family. Jim left us on June 1, 2011 in Winnipeg. He is survived by his wife Donna; children, Mary Lee McNairnay (John), Jim Jr. (Teresa Spencer), Barbara Renna (Carmen) and Robin Brisco (Dave Heyser). He leaves grandchildren, Jody, Roxanne, Duncan, Emily, Esther and Alex and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Beryl Hall and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Lila and Gary Briscoe; his siblings, Dent, Woody and Winnie; and daughter Janice. In lieu of flowers, should anyone wish to remember Jim with a gift, a donation to a charity close to your heart would be appreciated. A service of remembrance will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 8 at Churchill Park United Church, 525 Beresford Ave. Reception to follow.
