MILDRED EDITH BOND After 98 years of wonderful health, Mildred Edith Bond (née McFarlane) died peacefully on June 2, 2011. Her positive attitude and daily joy were an inspiration to all who knew her. Left to appreciate her love and support are her son Ross (Brenda Brand), and grandchildren Matthew (Dawn Smith) and Meriel; daughter Eleanor (Bill Harrison and daughter Allyssa); Dempsey grandchildren Bill, David and Shawna; nieces and nephews, and those related by birth and/or love. She was predeceased by husband Herbert J.R., sisters Peggy and Lorine, nephews John and Warren, and grandchildren Caillin and Lauren. Mildred was born on a farm near Binscarth, Manitoba in 1912, the third daughter of John McFarlane and Ida Lilliquist. After attending Brandon Normal School, she taught in one-room schools in Bethany, Dowsford and Woodstock before moving to Winnipeg to teach grade two at Victory School. Mildred married Herbert in 1944, moving to the home she resided in for the rest of her life. She devoted her life to her family, and after her husband's death in 1961, raised her teen-aged children as a single-parent. She took great pleasure from creative pursuits and volunteer service. As a lifetime member of the Annie A. Bond Guild, she knit, sewed, quilted, held babies and priced books for the Children's Hospital. She participated in numerous St. Andrew's Church activities, cared for her friends, neighbours, and provided a welcoming home to numerous family members. She was an avid naturalist and bird-watcher, and made camping a regular family activity. In recent years she took great pleasure in attending the Charleswood Adult Day Club. To the end, Mildred remained exceptionally active: walking, shoveling her sidewalks and tending her garden. She will be remembered for her indomitable spirit, her strength and her loving presence. A service of celebration and thanksgiving will be held at St. Andrew's United Church on Thursday, June 9, at 2:00 p.m. In memory of Mildred, please plant something that will add beauty to the world she loved or, if you choose to make a donation, give to the Children's Hospital Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Ross, Eleanor & families -- I was so moved when I read of your mom's passing. I began a trip -- and a long trip it was! -- down memory lane. I have nothing but fond memories of your mom -- I didn't realize that she was still on Ash street -- my mom still keeps in touch with Mrs. Smith. My sincere condolences go out to you at this time.
