Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGOPAL DASS BHASIN September 17, 1917 June 5, 2011 With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Gopal Dass Bhasin at the age of 94. He was a loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin, brother and a great human being. Peacefully, on Sunday, June 5, 2011, in the morning hours of the day, Gopal Dass Bhasin passed away in the presence of his family at home. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 68 years, Sulbha Bhasin, and his children Pradeep (Asha), Praveen (Priya), Pramila (Raj) Bahl, Praful (Sudha), and Pramod (Lata). He will also be affectionately missed by his grandchildren, Manav, Poonam, Saurabh, Sherry, Ankit, Akshat, and Mahima, along with his great-grandchild, and his cousins, nieces, and nephews. Gopal Dass was born and raised in Lahore, India. His father's name was Ramlal Bhasin and his mother was Ram Kaur Bhasin. Since he was two years old, his mother and uncles raised him and his brother after his father died. He did his schooling in DAV School and got his Bachelor's Degree at Lahore University. He also earned his General Insurance, Life Insurance, and Catering graduation certificates from Delhi and Bombay. He was given a golden opportunity to go to England in 1939 for professional purposes, but, unfortunately, the Second World War began, and he was unable to travel by ship to England. He got married in 1943 to Sulbha and they had five children. He was posted in India and he provided insurance services to the royals of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. He also ran a restaurant in the 1950s in Ajmer. Then, he rose to become the Divisional Manager in the Oriental Insurance Company in Rajasthan in the 1960s. Over the years, he also wrote legal letters and provided financial and travel aide as a volunteer. During that time, his mother died at the age of 97. He came to Winnipeg in 1994 with his wife Sulbha and his sons Praful and Pramod. However, his sons returned to India, and he has been living with his daughter Pramila and her family in Winnipeg for the past 16 years. He assisted with her business alot, and he helped raised her son Ankit too. During his years in Canada, he still travelled to India about eight to 10 times. Gopal Dass was fond of drinking tea, reading the newspaper, playing polo, and swimming. Lovingly called Papaji , he was a symbol-minded healthy cheerful hardworking responsible honest patient and peaceful person. He will be thoughtfully remembered by his family and friends. The family wishes to extend thanks to all relatives and friends that have offered their condolences for him. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray, followed by Shanti Path at 7:00 p.m. in the Hindu Temple at 854 Elice Ave. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Gopal Dass memory to the Hindu Society of Manitoba.
