HARRY ISRAEL On May 31, 2011, Harry Israel passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg, surrounded by loved ones. Harry was predeceased by his parents Zisu and Leah Israel, his brother Albert Israels and his sister Elsie Waldman. Left to mourn are his wife Eva, sister Sadie Levin, son Robert (Debbie) and daughter Susan (Sam Baardman), grandchildren Hillel (Yonah), Aliza (Avrum), Gilan (Chava), Leora, Benjamin, Rosalyn and Isaac (Rae), and great-grandchildren Merchavyah, Yeshayahu, Shelomo and Isaac. Harry was born in Winnipeg on July 3, 1918. He attended Norquay School, Luxton School and St. John's Tech, and studied at Winnipeg School of Art under LeMoine Fitzgerald. He volunteered for the Canadian Army in August, 1941, bravely serving his country during the Second World War in England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. After his discharge in November, 1945, Harry worked at his father's clothing store, Standard Clothing, in Winnipeg. He married Eva Kobilnitsky in 1947, and their first child, Robert, was born in 1951. The family moved to Portage la Prairie and Harry worked as a draftsman at Macdonald Air Force Base. Susan was born in 1955 and the family moved to Brandon in 1959 when Harry was transferred to CFB Shilo. They moved back to Winnipeg in 1960. Harry was interested in art and science, and he was an avid painter, inventor, carpenter and gardener. He was the only guy with a compass glued to his walker. His curiosity led him to try to build the world's smallest kite. He was a crooner of love songs. Whether at the Gwen Sector Creative Living Centre, or at the Portsmouth Residence and finally at the Sharon Home, Harry loved an audience, bursting into song whenever the opportunity presented itself. Harry was devoted to his family and was a loving father and grandfather. He was affectionate and madly in love with his wife of 64 years, Eva. He was eccentric, creative, hard-working, stubborn, honest and generous. He instilled in us a sense of wonder and joy. He taught us that every kite could fly, no matter how small. The family would like to thank all of Harry's home-care workers over the past few years, as well as the kind staff at the Poseidon Care Home and the Sharon Home. The funeral was held June 2 at Etz Chayim Synagogue, with interment at the Hebrew Sick Cemetery.
