Date of Passing: Jun 13, 2011
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCARMEN GOURBIL ZWICKEL 1928 - 2011 It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Carmen on June 13, 2011 after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimers. Remaining to cherish her memory is her son Roger F. Zwickel; her brother Felix and his family, along with numerous cousins and friends. Carmen was born in St. Boniface where she met her future husband, a French Air Force pilot, whom she married and moved with to Morocco to start an exciting four year stay abroad. During this time she worked for the American Army and traveled extensively through France and North Africa with her spouse. In 1957 she and her husband moved back to St. Boniface to start a family and once again be with the family she missed so much while abroad. She and her husband purchased Tim's Shack Bar which over time was transformed into an elegant and successful restaurant, the Red Lantern Steak House, that with its attentive and loyal staff attracted a clientele from all parts of town and stateside. After Carmen and her husband of 20 years divorced, she worked at Dowse Woodworking and then as a civil servant until she retired. Shortly after being diagnosed with Alzheimers she moved to the Manoir de la Cathédrale, where she was very happy for several years in her beautiful new surroundings. She later moved to Résidence Despins and to Foyer Valade where her condition worsened. A service will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel at the Manoir de la Cathédrale, 321 Ave. de la Cathédrale, Winnipeg, MB R2H 0A3, to be followed by a reception in their family room. A special thanks goes to the staff at the Manoir de la Cathédrale, Résidence Despins, St. Boniface Hospital and Foyer Valade. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba (www.alzheimer.mb.ca), 10 - 20 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2, phone (204) 943-6622.
