JEAN FLORENCE MCNAUGHTON Jean Florence McNaughton of Hamiota, formerly of Russell, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, June 14, 2011. She was 94. Jean was born to Roland and Lavina (Furtney) Middleton on the family homestead at Viola Dale on July 27, 1916. She received her education in McConnell and Hamiota schools. In 1939, Jean married William (Bill) McNaughton. They lived in Morris for several years and after the 1950 flood, moved to Russell where Jean lived until the year 2000 when she moved back to Hamiota. Jean was a proud mother and home-maker, active in her children's lives and in the life of the community. She belonged to the United Church, was a member of the UCW and was a valuable alto voice in the choir. She enjoyed working with children and youth, teaching 4H sewing, training majorettes for the marching band, and getting kids started at figure skating. Jean loved beauty and saw it everywhere. She was an active supporter of the arts and for years was involved with the local music festival. She was ever an appreciative audience member. She was an accomplished whistler and she enjoyed sitting at a piano and gently feeling out a few chords; she belonged to the sketch club, loved the ballet, and she mastered the fine art of sewing and created period outfits for the dolls she collected. Her get-up-and-go served her all of her life. She took all endeavours seriously and worked hard to achieve her goals. When she was 52 she took her nurse's training and then worked for ten years as an LPN until the twelve hour shifts were initiated. She was a kind and gentle nurse. At age 60 she learned to drive and loved the freedom that gave her. She found solace in nature and when she needed a spirit break she headed out to the valley with her thermos of tea to check out the view from a hill top. In senior years, she enjoyed her weekly sewing club and lunch outings with her friends. She travelled to Britain, Europe and Asia. Jean loved people and was always up for fun. Friendly and outgoing, she could sit beside you on a park bench and fifteen minutes later have your family history and life's dreams down pat. She was thoughtful and generous and kind to animals. Jean was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Ed, Lorne and Earl Middleton, by her sisters Alma (McLean), Irene (Beamish), Edith (Riddick-Dickson) and Alice (Bradley), and by her husband Bill and son Terry. She is survived by her daughter Linda, grandchildren Morgan (Kara), Amber (Carey), Janice (Derrick) and Debbie (Gerry), great-grandchildren Dusty, Breanne, Terrin, Devin and Jaedan, and great-great-grandchildren Charity, Jade, Spencer, and a wee-babe-yet-be-born. The funeral service will be held on Monday, June 20, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Hamiota United Church. Rev. Barbara Redeker will officiate. Remembrances and condolences may be emailed to raesfs@mts.net Rae's Funeral Service of Shoal Lake and Erickson are in care of the arrangements. (204)759-2160
