ALLAN GATEY September 29, 1922 - June 18, 2011 Allan passed away peacefully after a brief stay at Grace Hospital. Left behind to remember him for always are his loving wife of 61 years, Barbara, daughter Lynn-Dell (Lekh) Goorachum and grandchildren Anil (Amanda) and Ashley (Lin); son Barry (Jane) Gatey and grandchildren David (Laurie), Laura (Phil) and Jenna (Steve); daughter Cheryl (Vic) Eason; daughter Sheila (Normand) Durand and grandchild Jonathan. Allan was predeceased by his father Mike and mother Mary, brothers John, Ken, Peter, Norman, and sisters Anne and Donna. Surviving members of his family are Helen Carscadden and Deanne Brant (both of Moosomin, SK), Gerry Gatey (Virden, MB), Ed Gatey (Ladysmith, BC), and Joan Price (Vancouver, BC), along with many nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Rocanville, SK, Allan started his working life at the age of 16 with the Canadian Pacific Railroad (CPR) until his retirement 42 years later in 1980. During that time he also enlisted in the Canadian army to serve his country overseas for four years in France during the Second World War, returning to Canada where, in 1949, he married Barbara and settled in Lauder, MB. During his career with CPR, he was stationed in Virden, MB and Winnipeg, MB where he retired as Roadmaster in 1980. Though a no-nonsense boss with a strong work ethic, he will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humour and mischievous smile. He liked to curl and play baseball in his younger days and played a mean game of cribbage right to the end. Always a bird-lover, he kept birdfeeders full at their trailer at Spruce Sands and in their backyard. During retirement, he and Barbara enjoyed their escapes to the Shooting Star Casino and spent time helping out at the Windsor Park Seniors Centre where they were both lifetime members. The family will be ever grateful to the staff at the Deer Lodge Hospital for their support and loving care during Dad's stay in Tower 7. A memorial gathering will take place on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. at 10:00 a.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. If desired, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. Family and friends may sign a Book of Condolence at www.glenlawn.ca. Glen Lawn Funeral Home 982-7550
