WALTER AMMETER 1921 - 2011 On Friday, June 17, 2011, Walter Ammeter passed away at the Victoria Hospital at the age of 90 years. Wally was born the youngest of 12 children and was the last remaining member of his family. He was predeceased by his parents, Gottlieb and Rosina, and siblings Fritz, Emma, Elise, Frieda, Peter, Arnold, Siegfried, Gottlieb, Otto, Erwin and Emil. Wally's family came to the Starbuck area from Karabulach, Georgia in 1929, and settled at a dairy farm west of town. After completing his education at Starbuck School, he spent his early years doing farm labour and working in logging camps. He then became a partner with his brother, Erwin, in the purchase of their own farm. This became his lifelong career. When it became time to retire from farming, Wally willingly took on the new role of homemaker for his elderly siblings. Wally enjoyed playing sports in his earlier years, particularly curling and baseball. He earned the nickname Slug for his ability to hit a long ball. He was often known to hit the ball off the roof of the house that was situated beyond left field. Hunting and fishing were also lifelong pastimes which he enjoyed well into his later years, especially with his good friend, Ken Schade. Thanks are offered to Dr. Sheldon Permack and his associates, the nurses and care givers at Victoria Hospital, including staff in the Imaging Department. His trips down to them became social events, as they referred to him as Uncle Wally. Memorial donations may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church, Starbuck, MB, or to a charity of one's choice. A funeral service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Starbuck on Friday, June 24 at 11:30 a.m. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 nbardal.mb.ca
