Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN CHORNEY It is with profound regret that we announce the death of John Chorney, long-time resident of Falcon Lake, Manitoba, after a brief yet courageous battle with cancer. Johnny passed peacefully on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Ste. Anne Hospital, Ste. Anne, Manitoba, at the age of 93 years. Remaining to cherish Johnny's memory is his life-long partner Nellie (nee Karaim), of 69 years of marriage; granddaughter Jill (John) Wheeler of Virginia; grandson Sean Helmkay (April Hackett) of Ontario; great-grandsons Ben and Thomas Wheeler; great-granddaughters Genevieve and Nellie Helmkay; sister Doris (Kolomay) of Ontario; sister-in-law Carol Dirr of Winnipeg as well as numerous cherished nieces and nephews spread throughout the world. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Jackie (Helmkay) and his brother, Alec. Johnny lived a life well lived, as witnessed by his many friends and family. Born in Canora Township, Saskatchewan on May 24, 1918, to newly immigrated parents he lost his father to influenza at an early age. When his mother remarried, Johnny was adopted by his stepfather and took his last name, Chorney. The family relocated to Fort Frances where, as a young man, he was educated, played sports and started his professional career as a sous-chef at the Rainy River Hotel. His career was put on hold while Johnny served his country during the Second World War with the 1st Canadian Paratroop Battalion. Upon his return to Canada after the war, Johnny returned to the hotel food industry, working at the Kenricia Hotel in Kenora, Ontario and the Royal Alec Hotel in Winnipeg. He moved out of the hotel industry, but culminated in his professional life with the Canadian Penitentiary Services until his retirement in 1983. As a devoted husband, father and man of service to his community Johnny spent many gratifying days lending a helping hand to friends, family and neighbours alike. Having been a seasonal and ultimately a permanent resident of Falcon Lake for over 54 years, his roots grew deep and strong there. As a Freemason and a Shriner, Johnny helped serve and bring enjoyment to many communities throughout Manitoba as a member of the Oriental Band. His presence will be deeply missed by many. On Saturday, June 25, 2011 Johnny's Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in All People's Church in Falcon Lake, Manitoba. Rev. Brian Hamilton will be compassionately guiding friends and family through the service at that time. Interment will take place at a yet determined future date. The family wishes to extend their sincerest thanks to the medical staff at Ste. Anne Hospital, namely Dr. Bissonnette and the nursing staff, for their care and assistance in Johnny's final days; as well as to Dr. Duval, for his insight and concern over the years, Nellie and the family are eternally grateful. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7 or to Ste. Anne Hospital, 52 St. Gerard Street, Ste. Anne, MB R5H 1C4.
