KATHLEEN SAWULA (nee SWISTUN) On Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at Victoria Hospital, God in all His wisdom and glory, lovingly embraced Kathleen and carried her home to join her husband, Michael and son, Gregory. She will be sorrowfully missed by her daughter, Cathy and husband Herb; her three very dear grandsons, Chris and wife Merren, Adam and Robert, as well as her great-grandchildren, Brooklynn and David. Also left to mourn her loss, are her two remaining siblings, brother, Henry Swistun and wife Shirley, and brother Don Swistun and wife Florence. Her life was also shared with many nieces and nephews, especially niece Lori whose love for Aunt Kay was very special. Born on October 6, 1918, Kathleen was the eldest of seven children. She entered the workforce at an early age and continued to work hard all her life so she could provide for her family. She was a generous and loving Mom, Nana, sister and aunt whose family meant the world to her. On July 17, 1942, Kathleen eloped to marry her dear husband Michael, just prior to his departure for duty overseas with the Canadian Armed Forces. She moved to Vancouver, doing her share by working on manufacturing of airplanes during the war. Following their return to Winnipeg, Kathleen and Michael ventured into their first entrepreneurial venture with the opening of their grocery store, Commercial Aisle and later Nor-Heights Hardware, both on Airlies Street in Winnipeg's North End. She and Michael shared an exciting, wonderful, and never dull 63 years together! Kathleen's life revolved around her family. Cooking, caring and sharing her love with her three grandsons was a joy she especially relished. She ambitiously ensured their every want and need was met, and they will never forget her love and generosity. Mom and Nana, you will remain in our hearts forever. Special thanks to the staff at Concordia Hospital, 1 North and South and Victoria Hospital, 5 North for all of the kindness, care and compassion they provided to Kathleen during her time there. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave. Interment to follow at Holy Family Cemetery.
