DEREK OWEN Sadly, Derek Owen passed away peacefully at home on June 18, 2011 in his 68th year. Lovingly remembered, Derek will be missed by his wife Jacqueline, son Gregory and his wife Leaha, and his two daughters Georgina and her husband Mark Laine, and Christine and her husband Jarrod Robertson. Derek had four grandchildren who will deeply miss their Grandad. Derek is also survived by his younger sister Lynda, three nephews, one niece and their families, as well as members of Jacqueline's family. Derek was born in Huddersfield England where at the age of 26 he and his newly married wife decided to embark on a new adventure together and moved to Thompson, Manitoba. Derek proudly spent 30 years working as a heavy duty mechanic for INCO Nickel Mines. Not ready for retired life, Derek soon returned to work in a manager position with Thompson Technicians Ltd. where he continued to work for another seven years. Throughout his years in Thompson, Derek was involved in many adventures involving the Darts Club and as a leader with the Boy Scouts of Canada where he is still revered in Thompson as Hawk-Eye . Derek's biggest enjoyment in life was spending time with his family at their cabin at Setting Lake. In 2007, Derek, Jacqueline and mother-in-law Ida Green moved to Neepawa where Derek really began to enjoy his retirement. Derek and Jacqueline frequently escaped from the cold Manitoba winters travelling to the Dominican Republic. Being a dedicated family man, Derek made it a priority to visit his children and their families in Alberta and Ontario as well as making trips back home to visit family in England. The memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2011 at the United Church in Neepawa, Manitoba.
