LUCILLE CARRIE NITCHUK (nee SERNIUK) (formerly MALAYNEY, KOWALUK) Lucille Carrie Nitchuk passed away the morning of June 26, 2011 at Seven Oaks Hospital from heart failure. She was predeceased by her parents, Nikola and Agata Serniuk in 1959 and 1960; husbands Harold D. Malayney (1956), John Kowaluk (1968) and Michael Nitchuk (1997); sister Vera Maling (1986) and son Robert Malayney (2005). She is survived by son Norman Kenneth Malayney; stepdaughter Noel (George) Richardson; brother John Serniuk of Vancouver, BC; sisters: Doris Cifone, West Bend, WI, Lee Rouble, Los Angeles, CA, nieces and nephews: Pauline Chester, Rose Gevoga and Nick Maling in Winnipeg, Darlene Serniuk, Vancouver, BC, James McInnes, Los Angeles, CA, and Lynne Geneseo, West Bend, WI, and their family members. Born in Gardenton, MB in May 1914, her date of birth was registered on July 15, 1914 which became her official birth date. From the farm, the family moved to Winnipeg when she was 11 years of age. She briefly attended Argyle School. A teacher disliked her first name and changed it to Lucille on official school records thus, outside her immediate family, everyone knew her as Lucille. During the Depression era, she left school to work odd jobs, married and later found permanent employment at Rices Sport Wear. After her second marriage she became a permanent homemaker. Her dog Zippy provided constant companionship for 14 years. Even in advance age, she held listeners attention, spellbound, telling personal stories of Gardenton, the Great Depression and post-war years. Her mind was sharper than sharp, with a quick wit, even to her last day of life. She was completely independent in homemaking, shopping and social activities until January 2011 when her heart began to fail. She regularly attended St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, was a member and volunteer of the Ladies Auxiliary, Holy Family Nursing Home, and belonged to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church Senior's Club. Funeral service will take place Thursday, June 30 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Rt. Rev. John Melnyk officiating. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery. Pallbearers: Ben Pidverny, Martin Johnson, John Gevoga, Stewart Mulder, Doug Mulder and Brian McLeod. Honorary Pallbearers: John Serniuk, Nick Maling and George Richardson. Vichnaya Pamyat Eternal Memory
