Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY LORRAINE DOMENCO (SHEARD) (nee HIRST) 1931 - 2011 It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother Shirley, on Saturday, June 25, 2011, after a short, but courageous struggle with cancer. She died, as she lived, on her own terms. Mom was born October 6, 1931, the last in a family of eight. She is survived by daughter Janice Saurette (Ray), son Craig Sheard (Barb), daughter Brenda Vielhaber (Herb), daughter Carlene Rummery (Randy), her lifelong friend Florence Dell, and the pride and joy of her life -her grandchildren: Derek and Mark Saurette, Perry and Stefanie Sheard, Kristin and Alanna Vielhaber, and Sydney Rummery. She is also survived by her sister Evelyn Nelson, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends. She was predeceased by her husband Henry Sheard in 1982, husband Mike Domenco in 1992, son Kevin Sheard in 2010, her parents, and six siblings. Mom was very much the matriarch of our family, and was often consulted for advice. She was a stubborn lady, fighting for her independence until the day she died. All of her children have taken on this stubborn streak, and because of her example, we are all strong, independent individuals. Mom felt there was nothing her children couldn't accomplish, and she continuously offered support and encouragement to each of us. Though a stroke took away some of her mobility in 2005, she continued to live independently. She enjoyed dancing, reading, cribbage, bingo, and crossword puzzles. She continuously followed curling, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Winnipeg Goldeyes, the Manitoba Moose, the NHL (she was very looking forward to the coming season with the Jets' return), and just about any other sporting activity (especially the events that included her children or grandchildren). But, most of all, she loved her time with family and friends, be it at large gatherings, or visits just because . She was a very social person, and enjoyed many evenings at the Legion #9 on Nairn Avenue, her shopping trips to Safeway on Fridays, as well as visits to the homes and cottages of her friends. Mom's doors were always open, and she relished the times her nieces and nephews spent in our home through the years. Stray animals were always welcome, as were all of our friends. Mom spent many years working as a health care aide, and she appreciated the kind and devoted care she received at N1 South in Concordia Hospital. We appreciate the care she received as well. We especially thank Dr. Darcy Johnson, and the rest of the staff for their devoted care. Thank you all for making Mom feel human and real through this time. We, her children, find ourselves overwhelmed with losing her, but Mom's legacy continues as we follow her example in raising our children. We were blessed with a mother full of care and unconditional love, and we have all taken her guidance into our lives. For this, we are grateful, and we cherish those of you who have been touched by her love, and friendship. We know that you too cherished your time with her. A celebration of Mom's life will take place in the chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler, at Henderson Highway, on Thursday, June 30 at 3:00 p.m. Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren, as well as the nieces and nephews she cherished. As per Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200 - 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6, or to the Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7. Condolences may be sent to voyage@mts.net Though we know Mom's life ended on June 25, 2011, her impact will continue because she touched and changed each one of us. Thank you Mom. There is nothing you wouldn't do for us, and there is nothing we wouldn't do for you. We will love and miss you always, and will think of you often. Give our love to Kevin and Dad, and be sure to continue keeping a watchful eye on us. You will be forever loved and cherished.
