JOHN PHIPPS BAKER February 14, 1923 - June 28, 2011 John was born in Winnipeg and educated at Ravenscourt School, Queens University and University of Manitoba where he graduated with an Honours Degree in Law. He is survived by his loving family - his wife Beth Hiscox; his daughters Andrea Banning (Russ) and Julia Baker (James Hietanen); his grandchildren Ryan and Jocelyn; great-grandchildren Olivia and Joshua; and Beth's daughters Jill Hiscox and Robin McEachern. John was a sailor - never happier than when he was at the helm of a sailboat. When he was a lawyer in Winnipeg, a businessman in Ohio, a writer in Mexico, a charter captain in the Caribbean, he always managed to get home to Lake of the Woods every summer to sail. He loved art, enjoyed painting and producing sculptures. He was crazy about jazz (especially South American), was a successful investor and loved researching anything and everything that interested him. In short - he was a most amazing man who lived a most amazing life. He will be greatly missed. A service and reception will be held July 7, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at St Peter's Anglican Church, 755 Elm Street, Winnipeg.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Oh Andrea, I am so sorry to learn of your Dad's death. Thinking of you all and hoping the grief is easing. - Posted by: Nola (Eversole) Thacker (Childhood friend of Andrea) on: Mar 24, 2017

  • How can anyone who loved pickerel that much not be a fisherman? John even managed to miss out on the culinary portion of the event, but don't call him late for dinner! God speed. - Posted by: Robert Carpenter (Fellow Lake of the Woods Denizen) on: May 17, 2012

  • Knowing John as my stepfather for many years, he was a man of great charm, intelligence, humour and kindness. His love to argue a point was a tribute to his law degree! His sense of adventure and shaking up the status quo was inspiring! I will miss his honesty and forthrightness and encouragement to live outside the box. My heart is with his family at this time. The world has lost a most unique and special human being . Eleanor Randall - Posted by: Eleanor Randall (Family) on: Jul 03, 2011
