Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNORMAN NEUMAN It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of Norman Neuman at 3:50 am on July 4, 2011 at Victoria General Hospital. He was born in Morden on June 13, 1916, grew up in Manitou where he spent his school years and was awarded a Governor General's medal in his Grade 12 year. He attended Normal School in Winnipeg where he met his future wife, Muriel Fultz to whom he was married in 1944. He taught in rural schools in Manitoba, farmed in St. Norbert in partnership with his brother Raymond, worked for a time in Ottawa in the Department of Munitions and Supply, then served in the R.C.A.F.. Following his discharge in the spring of 1946, he attended the University of Manitoba graduating in 1950 with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. Prior to graduation, he entered employment with Pioneer Grain Ltd., a subsidiary of James Richardson and Sons Ltd., where he remained for 31 years retiring in 1979 from his position as Director of the Agricultural Department. In the 1960s Norm spearheaded the design and production of a universal fertilizer attachment for farm seeding equipment, which won an award for Design Excellence from the Manitoba Design Institute. His name is on two inventions pertaining to agricultural equipment. Norm was conscientious about contributing time and effort to community and professional affairs. He served as a Trustee, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Fort Garry School District and laid the cornerstone of Oakenwald School in 1955. He acted on the Board of Stewards and of Session of Fort Garry United Church. During his professional career, he served as President of the Winnipeg Branch of the Agricultural Institute of Canada; the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists; the Western Canada Fertilizer Association and the Canadian Barley and Oilseeds Committee; and he was involved with the Canadian Weed Committee and Manitoba Council of the Canadian Agricultural Chemicals Association. For ten years Norm was a volunteer worker with the Canadian Cancer Society as President of the Fort Garry Unit, during which he served a term on the Board of the Manitoba Division. He enjoyed curling, bowling, golf, woodworking, traveling with Muriel and activities with the family at their cottage in Gimli. For a few summers, with son Michael, he had the pleasure of taking their sailboat out on Lake Winnipeg. Norm and Muriel had a daughter and three sons, Joanne Randall-Ball and Michael in Winnipeg; Murray in Kelowna, and Roger in Oakville. He had four grandchildren, Katherine, Jamie, Zoe and Christopher in Ontario, and four great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Ida Birse. He was predeceased in January 2007 by his beloved Muriel. He was intensely proud of his family. Memorial service will be held on Friday, July 8 at 1:00 p.m. in Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Road with reception to follow. Interment will be at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
