LYLA EVELYN SHINGLETON January 10, 1925 - July 3, 2011 Peacefully, at the Victoria General Hospital, our dear mother Lyla Evelyn Shingleton (nee Scott) left us to rejoin her beloved husband and our father Bill. A loving and committed daughter, wife, mother and grandmother; a loyal and true friend; and a hardworking and dedicated teacher. Lyla was admired, loved and respected by all who knew her. It is with a profound sense of thanks and sadness that we bid her farewell. Lyla was predeceased by Bill in 1989. She leaves, to celebrate her life, daughters Laura Dean (Braden, Michael, Lisa and Carleigh), Diane Hemphill and husband Jim (Candice and Zachary) and son Gary and wife Michelle (Justine, Rachel and Graeme). She also leaves to mourn her brother-in-law Lawrence Tingley; her sister-in-law Winona Scott; her sister-in-law Gloria Miller; her brother-in-law Bill Kellogg; and many loyal and loving friends. Born on a small farm in the Pembina Valley near Manitou, Lyla was the fifth of six children born to Cameron and Mary Ann Scott who arrived in Canada from Northern Ireland in 1914 and 1913, respectively. Growing up Mom witnessed the bitter cold and snow that defines a prairie winter and the scorching heat that brings cracks to the earth in summer. As children we heard stories of the horse-drawn van that would arrive at the end of the driveway to pick her up for school in the dead of winter and tales of the two mile walk from town after a game of baseball in the summer. She never lost her connection to her rural heritage. After graduation, Lyla went to work for the Royal Bank of Canada in Manitou and then transferred to the Main and Logan branch in Winnipeg. It was after her move to the city that she met our dad Bill. Lyla and Bill spent many years at Red Rock Lake, attending square dance conventions, clogging and travelling. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Whiteshell Cottagers Association. She loved to cheer for our local sports teams and she was delighted to learn that the JETS were returning to Winnipeg. Lyla was a teacher - both literally and figuratively. As her children grew she attended university to get her Bachelor of Education. She studied while she worked and spent many years at Ecolé Regent Park School. Friendships formed there were nurtured to the present day. Her counsel was sought by friends and extended family. Lyla could be counted on for a considerate, thoughtful, and reasoned perspective. 2011 marked Lyla's 50th year with the Order of the Eastern Star - Friendship Chapter and it was a milestone that she was proud of. She held a variety of offices, travelled extensively and made dear friends. Even in hospital, the Chapter made sure that she was in their thoughts and prayers - keeping in touch as to her progress. Lyla was a devoted grandmother who loved each of her nine grandchildren. She enjoyed sharing anecdotes about her childhood with them and loved to hear their stories. She was a hard worker and reminded us that we get out of life what we put into it. Thanks to Dr. George Hutfluss and staff and the nurses and healthcare workers on 2 North. A donation in Lyla's memory can be made to either the Canadian Diabetes Association (Manitoba Chapter) or CancerCare Manitoba. Mom will be remembered at a service scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on July 8, 2011 at St. Andrews Anglican Church, 2700 Portage Avenue in Winnipeg.
