SOPHIE FERLEY (nee PANKIW) Sophie Ferley passed away peacefully on July 4, 2011 in Vancouver, BC with her daughter Moneca at her side. Sophie was born on April 18, 1921 on the family farm in the Pleasant Home district near Teulon, MB. She was the only girl among eight brothers and always held a special place in their hearts. Sophie is survived by her daughters Moneca Faircrest and Carollyne Marrison, both of Vancouver, BC, and her daughter-in-law Belva Ferley of Dauphin. Sophie is also survived by her six grandsons: Robert (Sherry), Walter (Greta), Edward (Nancy), Mark, Ian (Jane), Grant (Kelly); eight great grandchildren, brother Fred and his wife Edith of Toronto, sisters-in-law, Regina, Dr. Mary Pankiw, and many nieces and nephews. Sophie was predeceased by her husband John in 1981, her son George in 2000, and daughter Jean at birth. Also predeceasing her were her parents Wasyl and Maria Pankiw, brothers Nick (Frances), John (Gertrude), Mike (Alma), Dr. Peter Pankiw, Alexander, James, and George (Anne). Sophie and her husband John owned and operated the theatre in Winnipeg Beach for several years. When the theatre was destroyed by fire, the family moved to Winnipeg. Subsequently, Sophie and John lived and worked in several small Manitoba towns until eventually settling in Selkirk in 1974. Following John's death, Sophie actively volunteered for the Selkirk and District Hospital and also the House of Economy (Gordon Howard Senior Centre). Sophie was known for her hospitality and her love for her extended family. She was a much loved auntie to her brothers' children and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed. Prayers will be said at Gilbart's Funeral Chapel in Selkirk, MB at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 8, 2011. Funeral service will be held at St. Stephen's Church with Father Richard Ehrmantraut in Pleasant Home, MB approximately 10 miles north of Teulon, MB on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Pleasant Home cemetery.
