KENNETH BISHOP July 21, 1937 - July 5, 2011 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Ken Bishop. After a long battle, and with his family at his side, Ken Bishop passed away on July 5, 2011 at Riverview Health Centre. Ken is survived by his beloved wife, Pam, children, Brant (Shari), Bruce (Wendy), Lisa (Bryce), Gary (Terry), Mark, John (Susan) and Greg (Denise). Ken is also survived by 19 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father Harold Bishop, mother Irene Bishop (nee Urquhart) and Bonnie Bishop. Ken began his career with Eatons as a television salesman in Winnipeg at the age of 15 and quickly developed a knack for sales. Ken went on to work for Trans Canada Airlines (Air Canada) and studied in the evening and graduated from the University of Manitoba as a Certified Management Accountant. Ken worked as an accountant for the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and went on to establish a successful business, Zipper Courier. The company was established in 1974 with the name of Road Runner Courier. The company grew from modest beginnings with only six drivers and two office staff to become one of the 10 largest courier companies in North America with over 3 franchises and 550 employees. In 1996 Zipper Courier was sold to an American company Dynamex, and Ken went on to sit on the Board of Directors. Ken had a strong passion for sports. In his younger years he enjoyed curling and won numerous MCA events, as a skip. His passion for sports then led to his next career, General Manager of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1996 - 1999. Following a brief retirement, Ken returned to the workforce as CEO of Habitat for Humanity, where he rapidly increased their housing portfolio. Ken made various contributions to the community, through his life long associations with both the Kinsmen Club and West Rotary Club of Winnipeg, where he made and maintained many enduring friendships. His entrepreneurial spirit and larger than life persona, will be sadly missed by all. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Boniface, HSC and Riverview for their compassionate care during Ken's stay and final days. A special thanks to the Rotary Club members for all their recent care and support during this trying time. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Calvary Temple, 400 Hargrave St., with a reception to follow. Flowers graciously declined. Donations may be made in Ken's memory to the Winnipeg Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website.
