Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPETER SUMKA March 23, 1927 - July 11, 2011 Peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Monday, July 11, 2011 at Holy Family Home, Peter Sumka born in Transcona, beloved husband of Mary. Peter became a journeyman carpenter educating himself via books and on the job training. Work being scarce at the time in Winnipeg, he was convinced by his family to move to Montreal where he learned French and worked construction. Peter became more attuned to God when the little angel Mary Telenko crossed his path. Peter and Mary were married February 10, 1951 and soon moved and began their family in Winnipeg. Peter worked for a short time at the railway and then devoted his life to the land - market gardening and wholesale vegetable business. He acquired a love of fishing while in Montreal on the St. Lawrence River, and this love continued in Manitoba as he was a life member of the Arlington Sports Club where fishing, friendships and annual banquets were enjoyed. Peter and Mary's most valued accomplishments are 27 fold. Their children and grandchildren for which they are so very, very proud - Stephen, wife Donna, Andrea, Barbara, Vanessa; Daniel; George, wife Mary, Maryann and husband Brian Maloney, Peter Michael and fiancé Jennifer; Albert, wife Shelley, Lisa, Dawn and fiancé Nathan, Gerald, Tara and husband Maurizio Pallone, Lynn, Kendal, Shellise; Peter Jr., wife Brenda, P.J. Raymond; Katherine, Ryan, Adam, Melissa; Paul, wife Darcy, Sidney Anne, Cameron; and Andrew. Precious one, So small, so sweet, Dancing in on angels' feet. Great-grandson Zander Peter Rivers Maloney Born July 12, 2011 Also surviving are siblings, Victoria Lillian Copp; Albert and Jean Sumka; Nellie and Victor Hochkevich; Auntie Mary Esperson; Auntie Ollie Licharson; spiritually and lovingly helped by sisters-in-law, Sr. Marianne Telenko, SSMI and Sr. Elicia Telenko, SSMI; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Steve and Pearl. Prayers will be sung 7:00 p.m., Thursday, July 14 at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 15 also at the Church with Fr. I. Dziadyk, OSBM officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Peter's grandsons. Special thank you to Holy Family Home and Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate for their care and compassion to our whole family. In lieu of flowers, donations toward Holy Family Home, Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, Immaculate Heart of Mary School or St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church Elevator Fund would be greatly appreciated.
