NELLIE TANCHUK (nee PORROK) On Tuesday, July 19, 2011 our dear, sweet mother and grandmother Nellie Tanchuk at the age of 89 years, peacefully moved from this world to the next at the Victoria General Hospital. Remaining to forever cherish Nellie's memory are her son Larry (Jean); daughter Pat (Lee); grandchildren Nicolas (Carly), Chelsea (Aaron), Derek (Caitlynn), Darcy, Daniel; brother Bill Porrok; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased 12 years ago by her husband Walter of 53 years; brother Mike; sisters Annie, Mary, Jean, Alice and Polly. Nellie was born on the family farm near Mountain Road on March 7, 1922. She loved attending Big Valley School. Participating in the 2007 reunion was one of the highlights of her life. Nellie met Walter at a dancehall in 1945; they were married three months later. Nellie enjoyed being a homemaker, baking, gardening and knitting. She was thrilled with the birth of her two children Larry and Pat. Nellie was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally. Her love of family defined her. Nellie was happiest with a baby in her lap and toddlers at her feet. Trips home to Mountain Road to visit with extended family were an important part of her life. Mom made friends wherever she went and once you were her friend you had a friend for life. Nellie called the Adult Day Club at Lions Place her second home, attending every Wednesday. She always described her group as the fun group . Nellie was a devout Catholic, attending Mass every Sunday and volunteering at St. Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Church well into her eighties. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Josaphat's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 590 Alverstone Street with Rev. Fr. Michael Krochak presiding. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Portage Avenue. Pallbearers will be Jim Hancharyk, Mike Porrok, Wayne Gutoski, Gary Gutoski, Ed Levandosky and Barry Levandosky. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to the many home care workers who made it possible for Nellie to live in her own home until recently. A special thank you goes to Joy for all her acts of kindness.
