ELMER MCMAHON October 12, 1925 July 19, 2011 At the age of 85 years, nine months, Elmer McMahon passed away peacefully with loving family at his bedside on Tuesday, July 19, 2011. Elmer was the fourth of nine siblings born to Eldon and Polly McMahon and lived in the Teulon area all of his life. At the tender age of 19, Elmer enlisted in the Canadian Army and served his country during the Second World War. After he returned to Canada he took up farming in the Norris Lake area and although he never did get a driver's license, you could often see him driving to town on a tractor especially after he got the electric start Ford. Many loads of loose hay and straw and eventually bails were brought to the farm to care for the cattle and horses which he loved. He was a good neighbour to Harvey and Maude McMahon and later on when Stewart and Ruth McMahon took on the farm, Elmer took a great interest in the children's lives along with all kinds of neighbourly sharing. When he had his fill of farming, he sold the farm and moved to town and hired on with the Interlake School Division until his retirement. If you happened by Elmer's yard, you were impressed by the tulip and daffodil beds, the magnificent flowers in the summer, the manicured lawn and the back gardens, all of which he took great pride in. Inside the house, the walls were adorned with family pictures and photos of his Army buddies along with his discharge paper from the Canadian Army. Elmer was very accomplished at pitching horseshoes and could often be found travelling with the late George Crate from East to West to participate in horseshoe tournaments. Elmer won many local, regional, provincial and world level trophies and they all had their own special place in his trophy case. Some of the highlight trophies include in 1945 Champion the Canadian Armed Forces, 1992 Canadian National Men's D Class Champion, 1997 World Tournament Men's Class M3 Second Place and the Manitou Beach, Saskatchewan 40B Champion in 2000 to name a few. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at the Hunter Memorial Hospital, Eriksdale Hospital and the home care group at Gateway Manor along with Dr. P.G. Pillay for the excellent care Elmer received. The family would also like to acknowledge the longtime care and compassion Elmer received from his brother Herb and sister-in-law Marion who stayed with him through thick and thin, right to the end. Elmer is survived by brothers: Fred (Elsie) and Wally, Geraldton, ON, Cliff (Patti), Ottawa, ON, Herb (Marion), Teulon, MB; sister-in-law Audrey McMahon, Geraldton, ON; brother-in-law Bob Holloway, Saint Laurent, MB. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and other family. Elmer was predeceased by his parents Polly and Eldon, brothers Jim and Albert, sisters Elsie Slater (late Arnie) and Jean Holloway and sister-in-law Marilyn McMahon. Funeral services for the late Elmer McMahon will be held on Monday, July 25, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at MacKenzie Funeral Chapel in Teulon, with interment to follow at the Windsor Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Hunter Memorial Hospital or a charity of your choice. MacKenzie Funeral Home, Teulon in care of arrangements.
