JAMES (JIM) GRANT January 30, 1931 - July 23, 2011 Peacefully on July 23, 2011 Jim passed away at Riverview Health Centre at the age of 80. Remaining to forever cherish his memory are his loving wife Grace, of 57 years, his son Scott (Karen), daughters Kelly (Perry) and Paula (Matthew); his three precious grandchildren Jesse, Daniel and little Valerie Shayne, his siblings Evelyn, Eileen, Marvyn, Ted and Shirley, and many more family and friends. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Jean and George, his brother Lawrence (Bo), brothers-in-law Jarmy, Gibb and Payton, and sister-in-law Dorie. Jim was born and raised in Miami, Manitoba as one of a tight knit group of seven siblings who to this day remain very close. He met the love of his life, Grace, in Baldur and they married in 1954. Jim and Grace relocated to Winnipeg, living in Fort Garry while raising their three children. They shared a love for music, sports and family; golfing in the summer, curling in the winter, wherever family and friends would take them, and he attended every grandchild's game, concert or event for as long as he was able. Up until Dad went into hospital for the last time, Mom continued to play piano for him on his rough days which never failed to boost his spirits. Jim made a niche for himself working in Labour Relations, first as a prominent figure with the M.G.E.A. (now M.G.E.U.) then finishing his career working for James Richardson and Sons. He was, and still is, highly respected by those whose lives he touched along the way. Dad made many quiet sacrifices throughout our growing up years, always striving to secure a happy home life for us all. In order to not have our family uprooted he selflessly chose to commute throughout the country away from the home and family that he loved. When he returned and we were all together he was often heard to say I wish I could stop the clock right now. If only we could have. In the last weeks of Dad's life, while reflecting on his legacy we have all marvelled at his kind soul and gentle spirit and how much he has given to each of us as we go forward in our lives. He was a dedicated husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend and will be lovingly remembered and missed so dearly. We would like to thank all those who have given Dad his care and support over the years and most recent weeks: Dr. Roland Hayward his family physician, Dr. Michael Semus and Dr. Richard Greene of Victoria Hospital, and recently Dr. Joel Loiselle and nurses Marlene, Helen and Tannyse of Riverview Health Centre who provided comfort to him as well as us as a family. We also extend a tremendous thank you to Charlotte of Comforts of Home Care who was with him in his last moments to whom we will be forever grateful. Finally Reverend Gordon Taylor, Dad's friend and Minister who will be performing the funeral service. Funeral service will be held at Fort Garry United Church on Thursday, July 28 at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, a cash contribution may be made in Jim's name to that same church at 800 Point Road, Winnipeg, MB R3T 3L8.
