GERARD JOSEPH EUGENE (GERRY) PLAMONDON April 1, 1928 July 24, 2011 Peacefully with family by his side, Gerry passed away at the age of 83. Gerry is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years Odile (nee Pilloud), son Richard, daughters: Patricia, Lucille (Rick), Carol (Grant), grandchildren: Tracy, Kim, Trevor, Brittany and Sean, and great-grandchildren: Cory, Joey, Lemmy, Teague and Aimee. He also leaves to mourn his sisters Alice (Gord) and Jeannette, brother-in-law August (Jan), sister-in-law Margaret, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Marie-Louise and Alphonse (Tony) Plamondon of St. Boniface, MB. Gerry was born and raised in St. Boniface, having attended Provencher School and College St. Boniface before he embarked on a career in railroading in 1943. He started with the Canadian National Railway's Local Freight Department where he focused his attention on rates and tariffs, and in 1958 accepted a position with the Canadian Freight Association Western Lines. He continued in this capacity until he retired in 1987, where he held the position of Manager of Inspection for Western Canada. He had met Odile in 1951 and the two were married in 1953 and settled in Transcona to raise their four children. They both enjoyed travelling and did so extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada as well as touring Europe and spending winter vacations in the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Gerry was an avid sportsman. He competed in a wide variety of sports, most notably hockey, fastball, fishing, ten-pin bowling and curling. His greatest joy over the years was spending time with his children and grandchildren and also playing golf with his buddies at the St. Boniface Golf Club, where he was a member for 16 years. He was a lifelong member of the Native Sons of Canada and Le Club Laverendrye, where he served on its Board of Directors from 1981 to 1987. He was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be sadly missed by all who were fortunate to know him. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, July 28, 2011, at the Klassen Funeral home 1897 Henderson Highway at 1:00 p.m. A private interment will follow at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family would like to thank Dr. Harris and the Oncology staff at the Concordia Hospital, Nurse Anne and staff at the Palliative Care Centre for their compassion and assistance during this difficult time and to Kathryn and Jatinder of Home Care Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
