Date of Passing: Jul 21, 2011
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPETER W. WOOD 1919 - 2011 Peter died peacefully at home in Vancouver on July 21, surrounded by his loving wife of 60 years, Jane (Bull), and children David, Allison, Peter and Tony. Peter lived a full and rewarding life on his own unique terms. Conceived in the celebrations of peace after the War to End All Wars, he was born in Nottingham and schooled at Oakham College. He joined the British Army in 1937 and later the Glider Pilot Regiment. He flew on both the Arnhem and Rhine Crossing landings receiving the Military Cross. Arriving in Winnipeg in 1947 as a CA for the Hudson Bay Co., he travelled widely across the country visiting isolated northern outposts. He proudly worked for the Hudson's Bay Company for his entire career and with his good friends Don McGivern and George Richardson, helped shape the company through the 1960s and into the mid 1980s. In his retirement, Peter spent many happy years on the Isle of Man, challenging all who dared to evil sodukos. He was what Australians like to call a quiet achiever , infusing those around him with his energy, humour and integrity. His steady hand and common sense were highly valued by the many boards, both business and volunteer, on which he served over the years. His many friends will remember him for his kindness and generosity, his inquisitive spirit and his solid advice. Peter's greatest enjoyments included traveling with Jane to visit their children and friends in the far corners of the globe, mowing fields on his tractor, blazing woodland trails, making spectacular bonfires and rounding up volunteers' for fixing cottages and breakwaters. Part of his legacy will be his grandchildren spread across Canada and Australia: Alexandra, Alastair, (Simone), Amory, Manny, (Mary), Yash, (Bruno), Courtenay, Andrew, David (Colleen), and Fen (Elicia), who all carry fond memories of their grandfather and will miss him greatly. Special thanks to the kind staff at the Vancouver Centre of the BC Cancer Agency. A service will be held on Friday, October 7, at 10:30 a.m. at Augustine United Church in Winnipeg, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Winnipeg Harvest Food Bank.
