CORNELIUS (CORNY) JACOB HUEBNER 1930 - 2011 Corny was born on the Huebner family farm (SW14-4-9) northwest of Manitou on February 17, 1930. As a young farm boy growing up, he worked and played on the family farm and attended nearby Hazel School for his education. The Huebners were newcomers to Canada after immigrating in 1924, and young Corny learned his second language of English at Hazel School. As a young man, Corny moved to Winnipeg to finish his schooling and worked briefly at Eaton's mail order in Winnipeg. Shortly thereafter, he moved back to the Manitou farm and began his farming career. In 1954, Corny and Dot (Dorothy) were married and made the Manitou farm their home. Throughout the years, Corny worked tirelessly on the farm and was passionate about farming. Harvest was his favourite season and he deeply enjoyed combining, especially when family or friends would accompany him on the combine. In the fall of 1992 following a long and successful career in farming, Corny and Dot retired to Morden. Corny enjoyed a challenge and had many interests, of which one of them was flying. In 1969, he took flight training along with some friends from Manitou and received his wings . Another passion of Corny's was travelling and he and Dot travelled throughout North America, Mexico and once together to England. His travels took him and Dot north from Alaska to the southern reaches of Florida and visited many interesting places. Corny enjoyed meeting people and would strike up a conversation with anyone. Throughout his travels, he met with many different people and was always intrigued to talk to the local people that lived in that particular area. In the winter months if Corny wasn't working on the farm, you could find him curling, watching hockey or perhaps holding a coffee meeting with his friends in Manitou. He made many friends over the years curling in Manitou and played on many rinks. His crowning curling achievement occurred when he competed in the Seniors Championship in Winnipeg. After retiring in Morden, Corny became a voracious reader. His appetite for reading books seemed endless and he kept the Morden Public Library busy signing out books, requesting new releases and always had a book on the go. Corny and Dot hosted many family gatherings in their Morden home and he always enjoyed having family or friends visit. In 2008, Corny's health began to limit his physical activities. Despite his declining health, he kept reading and was always available to visit when family or friends came by. On Tuesday, July 19, 2011, he was admitted to Boundary Trails Health Centre for what he and his family hoped would be a short stay. On the following Saturday evening, Corny commented that he wished the Lord would come soon. His prayers were answered early the next morning on Sunday, July 24, 2011 as he passed away peacefully in his sleep. He will be missed by his loving wife of 57 years, Dorothy (nee Wokes) Huebner, seven children and their spouses: Warren and Rosilyn Huebner, Terry Windsor and Bruce Creith, Marian Huebner and Norm Goertzen, Debbie Treichel, Van Huebner and Naureen Grant, Carl and Kim Huebner, and Lara and Maurice Didkowski, 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is survived by three sisters, Hilda and Neil Rempel of Wisconsin, Mandy Huebner of Winnipeg, and Louise and John Dahl of Winnipeg. He was predeceased by four brothers and one sister. Funeral service was held on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's United Church with interment at Chapel Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Cornelius' memory to the Boundary Trails Health Centre, Palliative Care, Box 2000, Winkler, MB R6W 1H8.
