BETTY DICK (Written by Betty Dick) Betty passed away peacefully on Monday, July 25, 2011 at Victoria General Hospital. She was born on January 11, 1917 in Folkstone, Kent, England, the eldest child of Fred and Gladys Herity. She and her mother came to Canada in May of 1917 and settled in Napinka, MB, with her paternal grandmother. Upon her father's return from the war, they lived in Winnipeg and then in several small towns where her father ran grain elevators. She later returned to Winnipeg where she completed her education at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. In 1940 she married Ralph Dick. Ralph served 20 years in the R.C.A.F. and during that time they lived on various air force bases, Rivers, MB, North Bay, ON, Cold Lake, AB and Uplands, Ottawa, ON. Upon Ralph's retirement in 1963, they returned to Winnipeg. Betty became involved in volunteer work at Laura Secord School working in their school library. After Ralph's death in 1970 she became a teacher's aide with Winnipeg School Division #1 and worked 10 years at Mulvey School. Upon her retirement she served 14 years on the board of Westminster Child Care at Westminster United Church. Ralph and Betty were avid 5 pin bowlers and had bowled in several leagues in the city. She enjoyed knitting, doing crafts and travelling. She had gone all over North America on bus tours, over to the British Isles, on a Caribbean cruise and Colombia, South America. She is survived by her son Dennis, wife Margaret of Winnipeg; grandson Tyler, wife Amy and great grandson Jonas of Mansfield, TX and her daughter Judy of Calgary, AB. Also surviving are her sisters June Hall, Vancouver, BC, Patience (Pat) White, Winnipeg; her brother Boyd (Bud) Herity, Winnipeg and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her son Terry, her husband Ralph and her brother Ted Herity and sister Dorothy Anderson. She was a member of Westminster United Church since 1971 and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westminster Church Foundation. The family wishes to thank Dr. Wayne Van Horne and Dr. Grass of Assiniboine Clinic and also Dr. Penner and staff of Victoria Hospital for the care given to Betty. Cremation has taken place.
