CAROL AITKEN (nee JOHNSTONE) On Saturday, July 30, 2011 at Gimli Community Health Centre, Carol Aitken of Gimli, beloved wife of Bill Aitken, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness, surrounded by her family. Carol Georgina Aitken was born April 28, 1937 in Winnipeg, daughter of David and Stefanie (nee Bjarnason) Johnstone. Carol grew up in Winnipeg, Brandon and Yorkton. Carol first met Bill in 1958 and they married December 16, 1961. Carol and Bill have three sons, Bob (Sharon Firman) of Gimli, grandsons Mike and Tim; David (Michele) of Toronto, grandson Connor; Brian of Winnipeg. Carol and Bill raised their family in Arborg and retired in Gimli. Carol was predeceased by her father, mother and sister Pat Mutala. Left to cherish her memory besides her immediate family are brother-in-law Bill (Jean) Mutala; sister Debbie (Barry) Tustin; brother-in-law Lock (Pat) Aitken and their families; special friends Josephine, Beggie and Linda. Carol was very community minded. She was active in the Ardal-Geysir Lutheran Church, worked at Riverdale Place Workshop and was a member of the Arborg Kinettes. She achieved high distinction as the President within that organization. Carol loved to write and participated in the Lake Winnipeg Writers Group. She enjoyed discovering her Icelandic heritage and researching her family tree. Carol was famous for her annual Christmas poem. Thanks to Dr. Gera and the caring staff of Gimli Community Health Centre and Home Care personnel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Betel Home Foundation, Box 10, Gimli, MB R0C 1B0 or The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200-6 Donald Street Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 Memorial service will be held at A Lutheran Church, 301 River Road in Arborg on Wednesday, August 3 at 2:00 p.m. Interment of the cremated remains will follow at a later date.
