WALTER JAMES WEST A.A.C.I., F.R.I., A.R.W.A., C.D. Peacefully in his sleep, on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, Jim passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 80. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years Adeline, and his children Ray and Gayle. He is predeceased by his mother and father, Edna and Walter Henry West, his sisters, Thora and Betty, and his nephews Wally, Gordon, Terry, Tim, Jimmy and Mark. Also mourning his passing, are brother-in-law Raymond and Mary Massey, sister-in-law Lorraine Bruce and Terry Turner, brother-in-law Earl Young and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Jim was born on February 21, 1931, in Kingston, Ontario. His father's career in the Federal Prison System moved the family between Kingston and Stony Mountain, Manitoba, a few times. After grade 12, he attended Success Commercial College, after which he worked for the Prudential Insurance Company, Mortgage and Investment Department, which later transferred him to Calgary in 1956. Jim and Adeline returned to Winnipeg 1962, and in 1963 Jim accepted a position with the Metropolitan Corporation of Greater Winnipeg, which upon amalgamation became the City of Winnipeg. After he received his A.A.C.I. Certificate he was appointed Manager of the Land Appraisal and Property Management Department. He spent several years teaching the Appraisal Course at Night School at the University of Winnipeg. He also served with the Fort Garry Horse Reserve Regiment, and he achieved the rank of Captain after successfully completing the Officer's Training Course in Camp Borden. In 1986, Jim retired from the City, and he and Adeline spent many joyous winters as snowbirds in Corpus Christi, Texas. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Canadian Kidney Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society. A Niche side memorial service will be held at Lasting Tribute Chapel at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 3:30 p.m., followed by a luncheon at 4:00 p.m. at Rae Jerry's in honour of Jim, where we can share memories and celebrate a life well lived.
