SYDNEY LAURIE MCKAY September 25, 1921 - August 3, 2011 Uncle Syd was born in Tuffs Cove, NS. He lived there for a brief time, as well as Toronto, Ontario and Youngstown, Ohio, before making Winnipeg his home. He joined the army in 1939 and served overseas with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. He returned home in 1945 aboard a hospital ship. He was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife Helen (Rudnick) whom he referred to as a beautiful Lady . They were married close to 57 years and he found her passing very difficult to accept. He had worked for a small electrical firm for 39 years before he retired in 1984. Uncle Syd also believed in supporting the small local business which he always practiced. Both Uncle Syd and Helen were avid golfers and liked to travel. He told me their last trip was to Australia. He was also involved for 11 years with sport parachuting and said all his jumps were successful. Uncle Syd and Helen moved to Carman, Manitoba in 1996 but often wished they had moved there right after he retired. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no service and his ashes will be placed with Helen at the St. Vital Cemetery. He is finally with his love. He will be missed by many family and friends. Uncle Syd you will always have a special place in my heart. Rest in Peace. Love Deb. Doyle's Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Uncle Syd was a soft spoken man who always had a smile for you and we shared one thing. We both loved to fly although I could never figure out why he liked to jump out of a perfectly good airplane... When I was eight years old he gave me a flying model for Christmas. That was 55 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. - Posted by: Grant Rudnick () on: Sep 14, 2012

  • A tribute to a strong-willed, loving and caring gentleman. Sid leaves us with great memories of his devotion to Helen (nee Rudnick). His accomplishments were many, highlighted by giving up his youth to defend freedom while serving with the PPCLI from 1939-1945. He was a sport sky diver accomplishing in excess of 450 jumps starting at age 44. He was an avid golfer & contributed to various charities and communities to support those in need. Rest in peace Sid, as you are back with Helen, the love of your life. You will be missed. Phyllis & Wally Rudnick and family. - Posted by: Phyllis Rudnick (Family) on: Aug 10, 2011

  • When I think about family celebrations and childhood memories, Uncle Syd & Auntie Helen are always part of those remembrances. Uncle Syd, I observed and valued your loyalty and commitment to those you loved. Your wit and cunning sense of humour was a joy to have known. Auntie Helen will soon have you, her life-long partner in love, marriage, golf and friendship, at her side. You were loved and you will be missed. - Posted by: Wendy Rudnick (Family) on: Aug 07, 2011
