HAROLD BITTNER Peacefully, on August 7, 2011 at the Lakeshore General Hospital, Harold Bittner, aged 80 years of Ashern, Manitoba passed on to eternal rest. Harold was born on August 1, 1931 in Moosehorn, Manitoba to Bernard and Ida Bittner. He was one of 12 children who were raised at the current farm site northwest of Moosehorn, now occupied by Art and Marjorie Bittner. On October 22, 1955, he married Mary Baker. They resided in Red Lake, Ontario and in Winnipeg before making their home just north of Ashern in 1964. They built their home on a pile of rocks, including about five acres of gardens and lawn. They were very proud of the home they made together and always welcomed friends and family to their home. Harold was a talented, diverse woodworker. He could change wood into functional pieces, like doors, cupboards or houses or he could change it into art pieces like wishing wells, deck chairs or planters. Harold was a quiet person. He would prefer to sit back and observe, rather than being the center of attention. Many would consider him a quiet leader and looked to him for advice. In 2002, Harold was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He put up a diligent battle against this debilitating disease. Thank you to everyone for all your assistance, especially in the last couple of years of his life...years that were very difficult for him. Harold leaves to survive his daughter Kim (Calgie); son-in-law Stuart and grandson James; his sister Evelyn, brother-in-law Art Weigelt; his brother Art and sister-in-law Marjorie; sister-in-law Elsie Kerbrat; sister-in-law Liz and husband Jim Stewart and sister-in-law Emma Ruchotski, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Mary, his wife of 49 years. Cancer took her from him in April of 2005. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Ashern, MB with Pastor Erwin Tippel officiating. Interment to follow in the Grace Lutheran Church Cemetery. Thank you to all the HomeCare staff, L.I.F.E. workers, Dr. Rawoof and the hospital staff and to John and Karen of Arnason Funeral Home for your caring, compassion and understanding. Thank you to all Dad's friends, relatives, residents of Glencora 55 Plus and the community of the Pioneer Manor for your friendship and companionship. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favourite charity. Or, as a tribute to Harold, a gift of your time may also be offered. Choose a person who may have lost their partner or you think might be lonely. Take a few minutes of your day to stop in to say Hi to them. It means more to them than anything else.
