PATRICIA EMILY HAWTHORN (nee GARLAND) April 3, 1925 - August 5, 2011 It is with deep sadness our family announces the passing of our loving mother and grandmother (a.k.a. Nana) as she joins her beloved Bill after almost 11 years of separation. Nana was born in Sidley, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, England, the eldest daughter of Thomas and Lily Garland, where she grew up within a large, close family. During the Second World War Nana joined the W.A.A.F. and came to meet the love of her life, Bill Hawthorn (Pop), a Canadian soldier whom she married on May 5, 1945. As many war brides did, she came to Canada where she and Pop made their home in Transcona and spent the rest of their married lives raising their family. Left to cherish her memory are sons: Wayne (Patti) and Neil (Shelley); grandchildren: Dale (Trisha), Cory (Shaylene), Leigh-Ann (Paul), Chad and Kyle; in England, brothers and sisters: Dennis, Roy, Reg, and Peter Garland, Rita Freeman and Shirley (Tony) Rolt; sister-in-law Toni Hawthorn of Winnipeg, plus nieces and nephews both here and abroad, too numerous to mention. Nana was predeceased by family in England, parents Thomas and Lily Garland, sisters: Vera Garland, Eve King, Barbara Blackman and brother Bernard; sisters-in-law: Jean, Ellen and Edna Garland; brothers-in-law: Des Freeman and Cecil Blackman; and in Canada, in-laws, Ella and Fred Brown, Hugh Hawthorn and Mary and Ray Sellers. Throughout her life, Nana enjoyed 5 Pin Bowling with her sons at the Transcona Bowl, she served on the executive of the Royal Canadian Legion Transcona Branch #7, and for many years, ran the Old Timer's Carpet Bowl League for which the Branch awarded her a Life Membership. Another passion of Nana's was knitting. From memory she mastered the renowned baby shawl, many of which made it back across the pond . These shawls will be used to lovingly wrap her two expectant great-grandchildren she unfortunately would not come to see nor hold. Nana took pride in the status of being the matriarch of the Garland clan and made no bones about who was boss on the Hawthorn side either. Her older brother, Den, likened her feisty and tenacious demeanor to that of a terrier, and also brought about the nickname Sgt. Major given by her daughters-in-law. Her sons recall being pulled down to her level by their ears and episodes of washing of mouths with Palmolive bar soap, all the while knowing she was doing it with love. Her grandchildren will hold fond memories of her small stature, always commanding manners, teaching life lessons, pockets filled with peppermints, her sleeves filled with oversized Kleenex, shiny Loonies gifted on Sundays, the over payment for menial tasks performed, but most especially, the way she requested a kiss at the end of a visit. The family would like to thank Nana's nephew Clive and wife Heather Garland, our visiting family from England, for their love and support which helped us through this difficult time; Merv Joseph, her loyal neighbour, for the years of keeping her sidewalks clear and dry; Larry and Darlene Cox for gifting the beautifully crafted urn that will carry her to rest; Dr. J. Ormiston, the 3rd floor nursing staff and nurse Toni of Concordia Hospital; Sandy Porko and Richard from Palliative Care and Andrea MacDonald from Veteran's Affairs. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held on Friday, August 19, where according to Nana's wishes, she and Pop will be laid to rest together in the Field of Honour at the Transcona Cemetery. To remember Nana and Pop, tip a glass at the Legion sometime or sit on a sunny patio as they often used to do, and bid them farewell.
