ASAKO TANIGUCHI November 3, 1923 August 5, 2011 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandma, nana and auntie Achan, in her home, after a lengthy and courageous battle against cancer. Mom was predeceased by her father and mother, Sainosuke and Sato Fukumura and her sister, Tokiko Hirayama. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 61 years, Kazumi Jim, her children Russell, Douglas (Laurie), Lynn Campbell and David (Heather), grandchildren Brennan, Jeffrey, Kristen, Andrew, Lauren, Adrienne, Jaclyn and Steven, as well as her sister Lil (Tatsuo) Onotera, sisters-in-law Violet Taniguchi and Mitsue Fujita and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Mom was born in Vancouver, BC and spent her childhood there. She moved to Greenwood, BC, as a teenager during the war and then to Winnipeg in 1946 with her mother to join her older sisters. It is here that she met and married Kazumi and, with him, raised their four children. Mom was a busy mother and housewife taking care of her family and home. She was an accomplished seamstress, knitter and crafter, and her children and grandchildren enjoyed the benefits of her skills. She was a great cook, teaching her children and grandchildren to make sushi and other Japanese traditional dishes. Mom had a keen interest in leading a healthy lifestyle and was always giving us tips on cooking and eating well. She volunteered at the Concordia Hospital for twenty years. She enjoyed her later years with the Horizon Club at the Manitoba Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre where she appreciated the companionship of many friends. Our family would like to extend our deepest gratitude for the compassionate and professional care that she received during her illness. Special thanks to nurse Ann, Sandy, Donna, Rosalyn and Sandra, Dr. Duprat, Dr. Khan, Dr. Lezack and Dr. Garcia. We are very grateful that with your support and guidance, Mom was able to spend her last days in her home, surrounded by the love of her family. Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family from 1:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Monday, August 15, 2011, at the Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler Avenue. A graveside service for family and relatives, officiated by Reverend Yoshi Masaki, will follow. According to Mother's wishes, cremation has taken place. Flowers are gratefully declined. If you wish, a donation may be made in memory of our Mother to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 75 McDermot Avenue, Room ON1160, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9.
