Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCHARLES ROBERT (BOB) HAZELL Sadly, on Saturday, August 13, 2011, at St. Boniface Hospital, Bob Hazell passed away at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ruth, his daughters, Nissa (Bob) and Nadine, his grandchildren, Kiara, Kyla and Trey, his sister Marion and brother Bruce (Thea). Bob was predeceased by his parents, Dick and Alice Hazell. Bob was born in Winnipeg and grew up in Norwood where he attended Norwood Collegiate. He commuted to Bemidji State University, where he attained his Bachelor of Physical Education degree. At Windsor Park Collegiate, Bob taught physical education, coached basketball and organized an annual inter-provincial invitational tournament. He also taught at Springfield Collegiate and Glenlawn Collegiate, before he left the teaching field to work with his father-in-law for a few years, at Westnofa Furniture. After a brief stint in real estate, Bob returned to his calling, teaching Phys. Ed. at Lavallee School in the former St. Vital School Division. He retired in 1994, after leaving Lavallee and teaching one year at Darwin School. Bob spent most of his adult life involved in sport; baseball and his true passion, basketball. Due to this involvement in sport, Bob was honoured to be inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame under three separate categories: in 1991, as a player on the 1972 St. Andrews Super Saints; in 1996, as a coach of the 1975/1976 Super Saints, who were national Champions for those years, and in 2009, as a builder. He was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2009, as the coach of the 1975/1976 Super Saints and was also inducted into the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame. Bob also coached the varsity boys' basketball team at Glenlawn Collegiate in the 1980s and early 1990s, where he was also honoured onto their Wall of Fame' in 2010, as a builder. Bob enjoyed many years with his family at Caddy Lake, where both his parents and his in-laws owned cabins. In his retirement years, Bob delighted in coaching his eldest granddaughter's basketball teams. He also enjoyed golfing and meeting for coffee or breakfast with good friends. The family would like to thank Dr. P.G. Mehta and the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their care and kindness. Celebration of Bob's life will be held at Bethel Community Church, 430 Lakewood Blvd. on Monday, August 22, 2011, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a bursary being set up in Bob's name at Glenlawn Collegiate.
