Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryONUFREY PEKARSKY It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, Gigi, brother and friend, Onufrey Pekarsky, on August 19, 2011. Onufrey will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his daughters, Anna (Michael) Shymanski, Patti, grandsons Nicholas and Andrew Shymanski, sisters Bronia and Genia in Ukraine, sisters-in-law Lillian Pickering, Frances (Arthur) Winkler, and Jean Hrechkosy, and his many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Onufrey was predeceased by his parents, Hilary and Anelia, his beloved wife Olga, brother Nickola and his first grandson, Eric Shymanski. Onufrey was born on May 26, 1922 in the village of Stare Misto, Pidhaitsi, Ukraine. He immigrated to Canada in 1947, working in a lumber camp in northern Ontario first as a pulp wood cutter, and then as a cook. It was from those humble beginnings that he learned how to bake the bread his family and friends would enjoy for many years to come. After relocating to Winnipeg, he worked at Canadian National Railways from 1954 until his retirement 33 years later. He met and married his wife Olga in 1962, and together they raised two daughters. Onufrey was devoted to his family and took seriously his role as provider, through his strong work ethic and hands on efforts, such as his bountiful garden in the backyard. He was happiest spending time with his grandchildren and having family gatherings. He maintained strong ties to Ukraine, and supported his siblings his entire life. Onufrey loved animals, caring for many neighbourhood strays that looked to him for sustenance. He will be remembered by many as a gentle but determined soul. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of the Palliative Care Program at St. Boniface Hospital for their care and compassion. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 24, at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave. with Father Frank Szadiak, C.Ss.R. officiating. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Onufrey's memory to the Bishop Velychkovsky Martyr's Shrine, 250 Jefferson Ave,. Winnipeg, or to Oseredok.
