FRANCES CHARLOTTE ASKIN On Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the Lions Prairie Manor, Frances Charlotte Askin of Portage la Prairie, formerly of the Burnside District, widow of the late Arnold Askin, passed away at the age of 85 years. Funeral service will be held in the chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in the family plot at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Frances was born on February 5, 1926, daughter of Charles and Edith Edwards at Otterburne, Manitoba where she was raised and received her education. She then attended Normal School and became a teacher at Burnside, Manitoba. It was here that she met Arnold Askin and in March of 1949, they were married. Together they built their farm in the Burnside District, where they resided until 1980 when they moved to their second home they built. In 2006, they moved to Portage la Prairie and in 2007 she moved to reside in the Lions Prairie Manor. Frances enjoyed curling, square dancing, gardening and tending her yard. She and Arnold made several trips to Florida, and in 1983, they took a special trip to Europe. Frances also taught Sunday School at Burnside, and volunteered with the Burnside UCW and later McKenzie UCW. Her special times were spent visiting with her family and friends. Predeceased by her parents, her husband Arnold, son-in-law David Bayley, her brother Barry Edwards, her brothers and sisters-in-law Lil Askin, Miriam (Gordon) Nichol, George Grant, and Julie (Roy) Holtom. Frances leaves to mourn her passing; her son Ray (Elaine) of the Burnside District, her grandson Jeffrey (Jennifer) and great-grandson Brody, her granddaughter Lindsay (fiancé Bryce Carlson); her daughter Anne (Laurie) Ringland of Oakville, her granddaughter Melanie (Trent Gladue) and great-granddaughter Marina, her grandson Scott. Also surviving, is her brother Chuck (Nona) Edwards and sister-in-law Helen Edwards, brothers and sisters-in-law Leonard (Audrey) Askin, Ernie (Phyllis) Askin, Mabel Grant, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made in Frances' name to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 21 Royal Road South, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 1T8.
