DR. FREDERICK WILLMORE BARTH It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Fred on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 79 years. Fred was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Fred was predeceased his parents, Marjorie and Fred and by his dearly loved sister Jean. Remaining to forever cherish Fred's memory are his beloved wife of 54 years Patricia; sons Malcolm (Dina Alvarez), David and Angelina, Geoffrey (Julie), and Andrew (Allison Speal), Matthew, Erin and Jake. Fred was also loved dearly by Ken and Lorraine Mann and their family; Jennifer (David) Violago; Stuart (Lori) Mann, Kaitie and Casey. Fred was born in Hamilton, Ontario on December 12, 1931 and moved to Winnipeg with his family in 1939. He obtained his Bachelor of Science (1954) and Masters of Science (1955) from the University of Manitoba. He moved to Montreal where he continued his education obtaining his Doctorate in Chemistry at McGill University in 1958. Following graduation, Pat and Fred moved to Elizabeth, New Jersey to begin a career with Esso Research and Engineering. In 1961, they returned to Winnipeg where Fred began his teaching career as a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Winnipeg. He retired from teaching in 1990 after 29 years. Fred's passion was teaching and passing along his knowledge of Chemistry to his students. A number of his doctors were former students who fondly remembered their classes with Dr. Barth. Fred's other great passion in life was his love of the outdoors, especially fishing. Over the years there were many fishing trips with family and friends. Since 1973, every summer was spent at the family cottage on Dogtooth Lake, one of Fred's favourite places in the world. He also enjoyed travelling and over the last few years went on a cruise to the western Caribbean and a trip to Mexico where he was able to snorkel in a number of cenotes. A memorial service to celebrate Fred's life will be held on Thursday, August 25, at 2:00 p.m. at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church, 525 Wardlaw Avenue. The family would like to thank Drs. Nason and Wiseman and everyone at CancerCare Manitoba and the staff of the Palliative Care ward at St. Boniface Hospital for all of the wonderful care Fred received.
