She was the devoted daughter of Sam and Mirel Standil, both of whom predeceased her. She was also predeceased by her brother, Joe Standil, and by her nephew, Raymond Standil. Born in Winnipeg, Lucy was a graduate of the Peretz School and of St. John's High School. She was also a graduate of business school in Winnipeg, where she learnt secretarial and other office work skills. She worked at the Jewish Post, then at Sears while living for two years in Los Angeles, and upon her return to Winnipeg, doing secretarial and clerical work at each of Merit Insurance Company and Campbell Insurance Agency, followed by many years as a medical assistant/receptionist for Dr. David Swartz, and finally, as an administrative assistant in the Epidemiology Department of CancerCare Manitoba. Lucy was a well-respected and well-liked employee at each of her places of employment. Lucy then retired to take care of her mother in her declining years. She was unfailing in her devotion to her mother. Lucy is survived by her son Marshall Braunstein and his wife Dvora, and by her grandchildren, Gilli Braunstein of Winnipeg, and Tali Braunstein of Waterloo, Ontario. Lucy was a dedicated mother to Marshall, instilling in him the values of hard work and of living honourably, modestly and non-materialistically. Above all, she lived by example, teaching both him and her grandchildren the importance of family. She taught him the importance of maintaining pride in his heritage and ensured that he had a formal Jewish education. She took great pride in Marshall's achievements and in those of Gilli and Tali, in whose lives she always had a significant role. She was a doting Baba and was greatly loved by Gilli and Tali. Lucy was an avid reader, enjoyed art, and had recently rekindled her interest in painting, which she was doing until the time of her passing. For many years she was a member of the Board of Directors of Shalom Gardens Housing Co-op. Lucy is also survived by her sister-in-law, Sylvia Boroditsky, her nephew Earl Standil (Caroline) with whom she enjoyed a special relationship, and his daughters, Carrie and Libby. She is also survived by many cousins and friends. A graveside funeral was held on August 25, 2011, at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery officiated by Rabbi Ari Ellis. Pallbearers were Earl Standil, Dr. Shalom Coodin, Dr. Sheppy Coodin, Allan Kaplan, Mark Paul and David Miles.
