PAUL EMILE CARRIERE Peacefully, after a hard fought battle with cancer, with his loving wife and children at his side, Paul Emile Carriére passed away on August 23, 2011 in the palliative unit at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 87 years. Missing and loving him is his wife of 65 years, Gabrielle (nee Fontaine), along with his children, Robert (Odile), Gilles (Deborah), Mariette (Karl) and (predeceased Laurent), René (Madeleine), Alain (Maxine), Henri (Karyn), ten grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. Paul leaves behind his sisters, Evelyne, Jeannine and Simone, his brother Emile, numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews as well as friends that contributed to the fulfillment of his life. Paul was predeceased by his mother, Arline,(nee LaRoche), father Charles-Henri Carriére, sisters, Léonne, Germaine, Iréne, and brothers, Charles, Ernest, Victor and Arthur. Paul was born in Otterburne, Manitoba on April 10, 1924. After his school years, Paul went to work on the farm at Maison St. Joseph in Otterburne. In late November 1942, the war in Europe was going strong and Paul left home for three and a half years to serve his country. In May 1946, Paul came back to the love of his life, Gaby. They were married in October of that same year. In 1948, Paul bought a farm and there, with his beloved wife, raised seven children. With them he shared a strong sense of family, his love of the outdoors, passion for travelling and a joie de vivre that included great storytelling. The greatest challenge in that 44 year period working the farm with his family was the tragic loss of his dear son, Laurent. After retirement, Paul and Gaby moved to Winnipeg and he worked for a short time as a real estate agent. Also during that time, Paul and Gaby travelled extensively, witnessing the many transitions of Europe and Asia. For a man always on top of world events and politics, this was very exciting. During those years, they devoted time and energy to the community as volunteers in the Meals-on-Wheels program as well as other benevolent activities. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the many caregivers assisting in Paul's final journey. Special thanks to Germaine, Paul's palliative home care nurse, Dr. Ross MacMahon, Dr. Joel Gingerich as well as Dr. George Balko. Deep gratitude is expressed to the St. Boniface palliative care unit for providing compassion, comfort and companionship during his final months. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, August 29, at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Boniface Cathedral, 190 avenue de la Cathedrale. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave, Room ON1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
