PETER K. GOERS April 26, 1935 - August 25, 2011 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, Pop and Opa, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Peter was born in Berlin Germany on April 26, 1935 to Erna and Werner Goers. He left Germany in 1954 and began making a new life for himself in Canada. He met his future wife, and love of his life Marlene, in the fall of 1957 and they were married on June 10, 1960. They settled in Selkirk to work and start a family eventually moving to East Selkirk, where he lived until his passing. Peter was an avid fisherman and hunter, and was always willing to share his stories and tell a joke or two, sometimes not even able to get to the punch line because he was laughing so hard. He was also someone who enjoyed a healthy debate as many people can attest, and was always willing to take on a new adversary. Peter enjoyed his retirement by travelling extensively and spending much of his time at his cabin in Beresford Lake where he fished, visited and loved to play Canasta with his friends. In later years, Peter established a BS Club which met every Sunday morning and friends knew they were always welcome to stop by for a drink or three. Peter is survived, and greatly missed by, his wife and partner of 51 years Marlene, son Sheldon (Sandra), his prince, grandson Brohdi (Brohdster), sister Eva and her family in Germany, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces and nephews and his many friends. Memorial service will take place on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Home, 309 Eveline St., Selkirk, MB. Honorary pall bearers are Sheldon Goers, Brohdi Goers, Ronald Inman, David Sutherland, Rudy Ullmann, Robert Ullmann and Rod Graves. A private internment will take place immediately after the service, and a reception will follow at the home of Peter and Marlene in East Selkirk. The family would like to thank Mel and the Nurses in the Chemotherapy Unit at Selkirk and District General Hospital, the many wonderful caring nurses and Health Care Aides on the Medical Ward at Selkirk and District General Hospital, and a very special thank you to Dr. Demsas and Dr. Lindenschmidt for their unwavering caring and compassion to not only Peter, but our entire family. You are very special individuals. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations made to the charity of your choice or the Chemotherapy Unit at Selkirk and District General Hospital. The angels are always near to those who are grieving to whisper to them that their loved ones are safe in the hand of God Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
