Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY MARGARET SWANSON (nee HOWARD) 1928 - 2011 Peacefully on August 22, 2011, Shirley Margaret Swanson passed away at Riverview Health Centre at the age of 83 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Allen and Irene Howard; her husband, Neil (1993) and her son, Brian (1974). She is survived by her son, Donald; niece, Blaire; nephews, Larry, Kenneth and Robert, and numerous cousins. Shirley was born on May 22, 1928, in Fort Frances, Ontario. Her family moved to Winnipeg in 1939, and she completed her schooling there, and went to work for Eaton's. She had been working for Eaton's for about 10 years, when she met and married Neil. A couple of years later, they started to raise their family. When the children were in school, she volunteered at Laura Secord School, and eventually joined the staff, as the library clerk. She and Neil liked to travel to watch curling events and to keep in touch with family. Even after Neil died, she still travelled to visit family in Jamaica, Toronto and Regina. She volunteered at the Nearly New Shop for many years, and was a long serving member of Beta Sigma Phi. Shirley loved to knit, read and to enjoy the company of family and friends. In later years she was also a member of the Tuesday adult day club at Lions Place. Shirley had health problems over the last number of years, but she was strong and determined to not let her problems get her down. She lived most of her married life on Sherburn Street and enjoyed the activities of the community. Special thanks to Riverview Health Centre, Home Care (Barb) and her neighbors for all the help over the years. A memorial service will be held at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, (across from Brookside Cemetery) on Monday, August 29, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to Riverview Health Foundation, One Morley Avenue, Winnipeg MB R3L 2P4, The Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg MB R3L 0K6 or a charity of your choice.
